The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Published by BJE Music (A0.750953). Scarborough Fair is a traditional English folk song from the Middle Ages, referring to an old fair in Scarborough, Yorkshire. As a market fair, comprising of traders, merchants and other vendors, it started sometime in the 14th century and used to take place until the 18th century. The melody is in Dorian mode and is very typical of the Middle English period.This straightforward but useful arrangement is for a String Group or Orchestra with an optional part for Piano or Harp. Violin 1 is split into two parts - Melody and a Descant line. Harmony parts for Violins 2 and 3. Viola Part is doubled on Violin 4. Peter Maxwell Davies was thinking of individual and communal vulnerability when composing this piece, especially in relation to the problem of climate change and his home in the Orkney Islands, which is under threat from rising sea levels. However, this theme is not a completely negative one: Davies claims we must all enter the last door of light but the journey is full of light and joy. The melody at the start of the work, which Davies composed in the ‘70’s and never used, could be an Island folk melody and is subject to constant transformation throughout the piece before reaching apotheosis at the end.

The work is inspired by the ocean,particularly its greatest depths.The work is in two movements, played without break. The two movements explore the samemusical material (a specific collection of twelve pitches) in two very different ways. In thefirst movement, the material is presented often in row forms -- and harmonies derived from it.In the second movement, a more free approach is used to the material and it becomes moremotivic and gestural.The first movement, Different Purposes, is inspired by the vast diversity of deep-sea life.Musical objects interact with each other and ideas transform each other. Cerulean: Double Percussion Concerto (2004) for two solo percussionists and ensemblewas commissioned by the Carnegie Mellon School of Music for percussionists Cory Cousins,Mike Perdue, and the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales, director.The work is dedicated to them and to Howard Stokar. The work is inspired by the ocean,particularly its greatest depths.The work is in two movements, played without break. The two movements explore the samemusical material (a specific collection of twelve pitches) in two very different ways. In thefirst movement, the material is presented often in row forms -- and harmonies derived from it.In the second movement, a more free approach is used to the material and it becomes moremotivic and gestural.The first movement, Different Purposes, is inspired by the vast diversity of deep-sea life.Musical objects interact with each other and ideas transform each other. Many of these deepseacreatures live in very isolated and solitary environments at the ocean's lowest points.They each exist and pursue their own purposes without any awareness of what else ishappening around them. However, despite this, they are all existing within a commonenvironmental system and are thus achieving goals together on a larger level.The second movement, Different Porpoises, is inspired by porpoises and other sea-creatureswho surface, thus providing a link to human land-bound life. COMPOSER’S NOTE: Story Nr. 2 for chamber ensemble and a narrator, was written as a commission for the 1983 Children's Music Festival in St. Omer, France. Since its inception, the work has been widely performed in French, German and English. The narrative of Story Nr. 2 is a little known children's story by the great French author and playwright Eugene Ionesco (1912 – 1994). The story is about play on words. Little Josette has a conversation with her father who teaches her the new meaning of words: A Telephone is called Cheese, a Cheese is a Music Box, the Music Box is called a Rug and so on. The meanings become funnier and stranger ad absurdum. Then Josette and her father combine the words into sentences and practice the new mismatched names and objects. The characters participating in the story beside of Josette and her father are Josette's pretty mother and the maid Jacqueline. Each of the characters has its own musical theme and color represented by distinguished instrumentation: Jossette's theme is played by the flute, the father is represented by the trumpet and trombone, the pretty mother by the oboe and Jacqueline by the xylophone and piano. [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759) was a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition. Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order.[6] As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never composed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, with works such as Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remaining steadfastly popular. One of his four coronation anthems, Zadok the Priest (1727), composed for the coronation of George II, has been performed at every subsequent British coronation, traditionally during the sovereign's anointing. Another of his English oratorios, Solomon (1748), has also remained popular, with the Sinfonia that opens act 3 (known more commonly as The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba) featuring at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel composed more than forty opera serias in over thirty years, and since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and historically informed musical performance, interest in Handel's operas has grown. During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

The talents of Afro-Cuban violinist Joseph White were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had performed with him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised money so he could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard (1815-1888), one of the great violinists of his day. White won the Paris Conservatory’s Premier Prix in 1856 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Auber, Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. He was a major force in the cultural life of Paris as well as Europe for the next twenty years, performing on his Stradivarius violin nicknamed The Swansong. This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section. In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One. Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke). Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section. The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra. A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format.
