During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

It can be played by the full orchestration here, or by just the strings. The ecossaise is an energetic country dance in duple time in which couples form lines facing each other. Ecossaises were usually danced in 2/4 time. Although the word ecossaise is derived from the mid-Fench term for Scotland, any connection with Scotland is unclear. The orchestration is for Flute (with Piccolo doubling at the octave), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in A (Clarinets in B-flat are also included in the set), 2 Bassoons; 2 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in B-flat; Timpani (G2, A2, D3), Triangle, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals; Violin I, Violin I, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass.

La Fee Verte (2013, 12 minutes) for chamber orchestra and Galician gaitasI first became obsessed with bagpipes when my grandfather, Boston Police Lieutenant David Moran, passed away. I was 14 years old, and at his funeral police pipers played, just before the rifles were fired. I was overwhelmed by the power of the instrument, of course compounded by my own sadness and emotion. Years later, a good friend died and another friend wrote him a requiem performed by 12 bagpipes, and after being in denial about his death the power of the sound again made be burst in to tears. Then I was out a Tanglewood at a Silk Road retreat and Osvaldo Golijov had brought a friend, Cristina Pato, to demonstrate her instrument, the Galician Gaita. I was blown away, for the first time the power of the instrument hit me with pure joy, I had never heard bagpipe played like this and by a woman, it was just spectacular! I immediately found a bagpipe teacher in Boston, and started learning Highland pipes, and a few years later, in 2010, went to Galicia and began studying the Gaita. This piece is dedicated to two great gaita players, Cristina Pato and my teacher Anton DaVila. La Fée Verte was commissioned by The Silk Road Project.About the ComposerChristine Southworth (b. 1978) is a composer and video artist based in Lexington, Massachusetts, dedicated to creating music born from a cross-pollination of sonic ideas. Inspired by intersections of technology and art, nature and machines, and musics from cultures around the world, her music employs sounds from man and nature, from Van de Graaff Generators to honeybees, Balinese gamelan to seismic data from volcanoes. This piece has a dramatic, epic, battle sort of theme to it, which the many intruments help create. That epic feel keeps throughout the entire composition, though it still has variety and interesting parts to it. The difficulty of this piece can vary depending on what intrument is performing its part, though there is a decent amount of skill an experience required to play it.Loads of thought and effort went into this composition, despite it only being just over two minutes when correctly played. This arrangement is divided into two sections. Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama. It ends as plaintively as it begins.

This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section. In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One. Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke). Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section. The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra. A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format. The St Matthew Passion (German: Matthäus-Passion), BWV 244, is a Passion, a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander. It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew (in the Luther Bible) to music, with interspersed chorales and arias. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. The Chalumeau Concerto by Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688 - 1758) is one of the few examples of a piece written by a signiï¬cant composer for this instrument. In addition to being a piece written for an instrument in transition, the piece itself is from an era when compositional style was in great transition. The Chalumeau Concerto has elements that can be considered either late Baroque period or early Classical period just like the instrument itself. To add to the strange development of this instrument, two additional spellings are found on the original set of parts. “Chalumeaux†and “Chalimeau†can be clearly seen.
