Water, especially moving water, was always a vibrant part of my childhood, from playing in the small creek down the hill out my back door, to swimming and fishing at Deam Lake, riding riverboats along the Ohio, or enjoying the beaches. Water carries with it the promise of life, the power of nature. Ever Forward is written in three sections - Waves, Wreck and Work. Waves begins as woodwinds sing mellow tunes over the gentle ripples on languid waters in the strings. An abrupt, unannounced Wreck interrupts the relaxed excursion - the siren alarms blaring out against the havoc. Finally, just as sailors would pull together to tackle tough jobs, the community rallies together to Work out answers to the problems that have surfaced. Cellos start up Haul Away, Joe, a short-drag chantey (used mainly for tightening the sheet) where all hands haul together on the last ‘Joe’. More and more join in on the effort, bringing the piece to a spirited finale.

I deserve it.Though it was written with larger groups in mind or small orchestras, keeping it in a way quite simple, it can most likely be played with 2 clarinets, a cello, and a trumpet. I can imagine it can work quite nicely with a school orchestra or any small ensemble, even if some might need to make some minor adjustments to how it's played. It's meant to be played in an upbeat and happy fashion, and the trumpet should be sexy and fun. It'll be fun to hear how others interpret it.The PDF includes the full score and all 4 individual parts (Clarinet, Clarinet Section in Bb, Cellos, Trumpet Section in Bb). Shining Space: Quintet for Horn and Strings (2006) was commissioned by and is dedicatedto Hazel Dean Davis and Stephen Hackbarth on the occasion of their marriage, June 24, 2006.The work was premiered by James Sommerville, horn with Sarah Kapustin and FrancescaAnderegg, violins, Nathan Burke, viola, and Peter Lorenzo Anderegg, cello.The basic musical material for the work is a set of intervals which is gradually “expandedoutward†– moving from close dissonance to luminous consonance. This could be seen torepresent a sense of freedom, growth, and a bright future.The first movement, Bright Morning Sky, begins vibrantly with ecstatic ringing in the higherstrings. The cello presents the work’s basic pitch material in dramatic gestures. The hornthen enters: first abortively and then affirmatively – changing the texture to focus on itself.The horn continues lyrical melodic development while the strings react, dissipating theirinitial energy. Nervous tremolos in the strings start to build back energy again, leading to awild climax. The music then relaxes into the next section marked “Slow, suspended.†Thehorn and strings interact melodically, supported by luminous harmonies. The nervoustremolos return, regaining energy towards the coda. The work ends with the ecstatic ringingof the opening – but,this time, the harmonic material is open and bright.The second movement, I Am the Vine, is serene and expressive – consisting of a series ofcanons which develop, break-off, and start again. The canons are almost always in twovoices – representing two lives intertwining.The third movement, Chasing Windflower, returns to the energy of the opening movement.However, the harmonic language begins this time with the open sonorities. Darker colors(from the first movement) continue to interject, but are always overwhelmed by a sense offree-wheeling excitement. The work presses on to an ecstatic coda – with a sense ofunfettered joy.

I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo.
