They make it possible for pianist and string quartet to reinvigorate the canon of these Concerti without the space, sonic volume, and expenses of full orchestra, thus making it possible to play in a wider variety of smaller and more intimate venues. This in turn creates the opportunity for more audiences to enjoy these works performed more often. I have loved these pieces all my life, and by arranging them in this way the Mozart Piano Concerti will be played more, heard more, and be given the honor they deserve.

Benedetto Giacomo Marcello (Italian: [beneˈdetto marˈtʃɛllo]; (31 July or 1 August 1686 – 24 July 1739) was an Italian composer, writer, advocate, magistrate, and teacher. Born in Venice, Benedetto Marcello was a member of a noble family and his compositions are frequently referred to as Patrizio Veneto. Although he was a music student of Antonio Lotti and Francesco Gasparini, his father wanted Benedetto to devote himself to law. Benedetto managed to combine a life in law and public service with one in music. In 1711 he was appointed a member of the Council of Forty (in Venice's central government), and in 1730 he went to Pola as Provveditore (district governor). Due to his health having been impaired by the climate of Istria, Marcello retired after eight years in the capacity of Camerlengo to Brescia where he died of tuberculosis in 1739. Benedetto Marcello was the brother of Alessandro Marcello, also a notable composer. On 20 May 1728 Benedetto Marcello married his singing student Rosanna Scalfi in a secret ceremony. However, as a nobleman his marriage to a commoner was unlawful and after Marcello's death the marriage was declared null by the state. Rosanna was unable to inherit his estate, and filed suit in 1742 against Benedetto's brother Alessandro Marcello, seeking financial support. Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II. Invocation Simple Song of Fun/Om ma ni pad me hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) (Om ah hum hum. Om ah kham hum. Om ah om hum. Om ah sva hum. Om ah ah hum. Om ah ha hum. Om ah lam hum. Om ah mam hum. Om ah bam hum. Om ah tam hum. Om ah jah hum. Om ah hum hum. Om ah bam hum. Om ah hoh hum. Om ah maim hum. Om ah thlim hum. Om am om hum. Om ah om hum. Om ah om hum. Om ah hum hum. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (Italian: [anˈtÉ”Ënjo ˈluËtʃo viˈvaldi]; 4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian Baroque musical composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, and priest. Born in Venice, the capital of the Venetian Republic, he is regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than fortyoperas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons. Many of his compositions were written for the all-female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà , a home for abandoned children. Vivaldi had worked there as a Catholic priest for 1 1/2 years and was employed there from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for royal support. The guitar concerto Phygein Adynaton (Impossible to Escape) calls for a guitarist with two classical guitars (one of which is prepared with paper-clips) and orchestra. The work is in one movement throughout but essentially has two parts divided in half by the guitar Cadenza at the end of the first part. The first part is evocative and stochastic. This invocation is around a tonal center where guitar and orchestra coexist in equal terms. In the second part the orchestra takes a different, more dynamic part. The prepared guitar sounds almost distorted, like a new instrument melodic and percussive at the same time. This part of the concerto is darker in the mood and of a philosophical point of view is trying to give a direction in the battle between life and death.
