I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo. Key: D major.Mozart schrieb das Rondo C-dur, KV 373 für Violine und Orchester 1781 für Antonio Brunetti, dem Konzertmeister der Salzburger Kapelle. Bereits im selben Jahr wurde das Werk von Brunetti aufgeführt; gedruckt wurde es aber erst 1800, neun Jahre nach Mozarts Tod. Ein Jahr später erschien eine nach D-dur transponierte Fassung für Querflöte und Orchester. Zur Zeit der Klassik war das Uminstrumentieren eigener oder fremder Werke nicht mehr so üblich wie im Barock. Aber es gibt noch genügend Beispiele; gerade Mozart liefert den besten Beweis (KV 413). Im Gegensatz zu der Ausgabe von 1801 ist die vorliegende Fassung enger am Originaltext orientiert, behält aber die Transposition nach D-dur bei; die Praxis hat gezeigt, dass die Querflöte in der D-dur-Fassung besser klingt.

Developed from a study of Sergei Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony in D Major, Opus 25, the Transformation Symphony was written as a tribute to Prokofiev’s style much as Prokofiev paid homage to the works of Joseph Haydn. The Transformation Symphony consists of four contrasting movements which include Dream (Allegro), Sacrifice (Larghetto), Perseverance (Minuet and Trio) and Metamorphosis (Rondo.)Each movement can be defined as a progression from a dream to the sacrifice that is needed to reach the dream to the perseverance needed to maintain the sacrifice to the metamorphosis that comes from having achieved the dream. The composer includes a linear progression in the four movements yet manages to also intertwine these elements in the last movement to indicate that the creative process can be both linear and interspersed.

Beethoven's Romance No. 1 in G major for violin and orchestra op. 40 (c. 1801) was transposed in C major, arranged in the new key and appropriate tempo, and expanded to form a rondo Finale fit for his unfinished Concerto in C major, of which only about a half of a clean copy of the first movement survived as WoO 5 (1791-1792). Also, a newly composed solo cadenza was now inserted. Almost surely, the Romance No. 2 in F major op. 50 (c. 1791?) was intended as the slow movement of the Concerto (it has virtually the same scoring as WoO 5, the manuscript bears no title, and there is a thematic relation to WoO 5). The Romance No. 1 in G major was probably intended as a replacement or alternate slow movement, but it is his only composition relatable to the Concerto fragment, so I adapted it as conjecture Finale for a complete performing version of the Concerto.

The work was written in celebration of the Mozart Year 2006.Unlike most recent piano concerti, this work is a concerto designed for small performingforces. It sits between typical chamber music and the typical piano concerto.The work was inspired by the various Mozart concerti (such as K. 449) which are oftenperformed with very small string sections. Thus, this concerto may be performed with as fewas single strings on each part, or a larger full string orchestraThe work is cast in one movement, containing two large sections (sub-movements).Structurally, the piece is a highly condensed version of Classical period symphonic form.The first section of the work is an exposition-development/sonata allegro combined with aslow movement. The second section is a combination of a triple-meter scherzo and a rondofinale.The musical material throughout derives tonally from the three notes of a D-major triad (D,F#, and A). Those three pitches serve as transformation centers for the work's material andalso plot the tonal areas of each section. The musical material of the work thus ranges fromhighly Classical melodies (although all original) and textures to more Romantic andmodernist elements that transform out of the initial material.
