The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audience, and chamber orchestra (piano, organ, strings-suggested minimum of 3.3.3.2.1),was commissioned by The Memorial Church at Harvard University. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. As such, it is a book that provides excellent source material for a dramatic choral libretto of this scale.Although much of Acts is focused on the ministry of Saul/Paul, this oratorio draws most of its material from thefirst third of the book, prior to and including the conversion of Saul. In the Prologue, Christ’s ascension is narratedand—following an orchestral Sinfonia—the chorus sings words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Plain in Luke’sgospel that foreshadow many of the trials the apostles go on to face. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faith—a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts,only a small portion of which is presented here. Full of scriptural references, including the quotation from Isaiah“Heaven is my throne…â€, the end of the narrative is remarkable for two reasons: firstly, Stephen’s final wordsmirror those of Christ on the cross in Luke’s gospel—where Jesus forgives his executioners and prays “Father, intoyour hands I commend my spirit†(Luke 23:46); secondly, Saul is specifically mentioned as one who approved ofStephen’s stoning, indicative of the redemptive possibilities of the Christian message.The account of the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch here in the oratorio ends with the First Song of Isaiah—whilenot quoted in Acts, it seems a fitting conclusion to the scene as Philip and the eunuch were reading Isaiah together,and the canticle has often been associated by Christians with the rite of baptism. Similarly, the story of Saul’sConversion is followed here by a Christological poem found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, though it is likely aquotation from an earlier source. It is often regarded as the earliest extant Christian hymn.The Acts of the Apostles concludes with Luke’s realistic assessment that in spite of Paul’s energetic evangelism manyremained unconvinced by the Christian message. At the heart of both Luke’s gospel and Acts is the tension betweenthe uniquely important role of the Jewish traditions that Jesus himself practiced and the expansion of the gospel togentiles, of whom Luke himself is one. It is appropriate, therefore, to follow Paul’s message of salvation to thegentiles with the Magnificat: a canticle that emphasizes the promises of God to the people of Israel throughouthistory.Three traditional hymn texts are found in the oratorio, each set congregationally to a pre-existing tune. Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (HWV 74) is a secular cantata composed by George Frideric Handel to a libretto by Ambrose Philips, of which the first line, Eternal source of light divine, provides an alternative title for the work. It was probably composed during January 1713 for a performance on 6 February 1713, although there is no record of the performance having actually taken place. It was originally written in the key of D major for a tenor or alto soloist.

The Canticum Canticorum text also known as Song of Songs, the Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles, (Old Greek: Άσμα Ασμάτων, same meaning as song of songs). As David Berlo once beautifully put this into words: Meanings are in people … not in the messages …. The elements and structure of a language … are only symbols …. Meanings are not transmittable … Only messages are transmittable, and meanings are not in the message, they are in the message-users! Therefore, I needed to understand and interpret the text itself, even before I wanted to try setting it to the music. However, in order to understand the text correctly, one should comprehend the origin of the text and get to know its author(s), at first. In the case of Canticum Canticorum, both the author and the origin of the text are obscure. Furthermore, even the approximate date/century/era of the birth and the cultural context in which the text was created, are far from clear. According to the scholars, the creation of the text ranges from the tenth century B.C.; the era of Solomon, up to the first century B.C., and the origin of it considers from Indian, Tamil, or Ethiopic literature to Palestinian one. Because of these vast spectra of dates and cultures, I had to read and understand the text, compare with other sources, find similarities in other languages and cultures, hermeneutically interpret it and search for those non-written or metaphorical clues that may lead to unfasten the mystery has been attached to the text. In order to achieve the most accurate and faithful interpretation of the text I also had to answer few questions regarding the style, structure, medium, architecture and techniques of the music in relation to the text. I have used string orchestra and mixed choir to render the ideas, since that is among highly versatile instrumentations capable of providing small and delicate whispers, heavenly voices, and intonation changes that is hardly-reproducible by other mediums as well as thunderous sounds. Although Canticum Canticorum is single-movement work, but still possible to distinguish three different sections: the beginning choral part that is a long fugue in 5 voices with the material of serial music which helps orchestra to enter and grow, the a-capella middle section consists of two contrasting but invisibly related atmospheres and the third section – the recapitulation of the ideas already presented, in both the text and the music. The culmination of the work; 11-parts choral, takes place in the third section, somewhere near the end of the piece. Canticum Canticorum, for Grand String Orchestra & Mixed Choir, is dedicated to the genius composer of our time, Maestro Prof. dr. h.c. Krzysztof Penderecki.

Titl had been the military bandmaster in Prague since 1835. In 1840 he was hired as the successor of Heinrich Proch to the theater in Josefstadt, where he stayed until 1846. From 1850 until his retirement in 1870 he worked at the Burgtheater as Kapellmeister. As a composer, Titl created numerous songs and stage music for both of the above theaters. His greatest success was the Singspiel Der Zauberschleier by Franz Xaver Told, which contained the song A Wirtsg'schäft, which was extremely popular at the time, is really not bad.In 1898 the Titlgasse in Vienna-Hietzing was named after him. Titl's Serenade was composed for flute and horn with orchestra or piano accompaniment. With a lilting Bel Canto style in 12/8, its lyric melody features passages of filigree work that will excite and challenge the musician's technical as well as expressive capabilities. The piece is ideal for contest or recital for the intermediate player. This edition for flute, horn and orchestra is based in 2 sources , a set or parts published in 1896 by the French publisher E. GALLET plate n. G.5688 and a manuscript of the parts from Austrian National Library and has been carefully arranged and edited by James Strauss. All the discrepancies between the sources were corrected and for the very first time in a Full Score format.

This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life.The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. Qui sedes - Duet for Soprano and Alto from Mass in G Major - Fullscore and PartsCarlos Seixas (1704-1742) was a Portuguese composer and organist who had close contact with the avant-garde European music of his time. Despite never leaving Portugal, Seixas collaborated with Domenico Scarlatti, who was the chapel master of the Portuguese court. Seixas is considered the most important Portuguese baroque composer of keyboard music. Although none of his original works survived, he is credited with composing approximately 700 toccatas. Of these, only ninety-five survived in authenticated sources, along with other instrumental pieces and ten complete vocal works, including the Mass in G major. This mass is written for four soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), choir, and strings. It is divided into five parts: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. In addition to the choral sections, this piece also includes four arias, one for each soloist, two duets for soprano and alto, and a trio for soprano, alto, and tenor.

Arte Nova Music Lab #3005423. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742401). The four orchestral suites (called ouvertures by their author), BWV 1066–1069 are four suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. The name ouverture refers only in part to the opening movement in the style of the French overture, in which a majestic opening section in relatively slow dotted-note rhythm in duple meter is followed by a fast fugal section, then rounded off with a short recapitulation of the opening music. More broadly, the term was used in Baroque Germany for a suite of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by such an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual: Robin Stowell writes that Telemann's 135 surviving examples [represent] only a fraction of those he is known to have written;[1] Christoph Graupner left 85; and Johann Friedrich Fasch left almost 100. Bach did write several other ouverture (suites) for solo instruments, notably the Cello Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, which also exists in the autograph Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, the Keyboard Partita no. 4 in D, BWV 828, and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 for keyboard. The two keyboard works are among the few Bach published, and he prepared the lute suite for a Monsieur Schouster, presumably for a fee, so all three may attest to the form's popularity.Scholars believe that Bach did not conceive of the four orchestral suites as a set (in the way he conceived of the Brandenburg Concertos), since the sources are various, as detailed below.The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue includes a fifth suite, BWV 1070 in G minor. First of all, my enormous gratitude to Deborah Leath Rentz for the source material: Songs and the Spirit: Hancock Shaker Village's Musical Legacy, Volume I. Transcriptions of Hancock Hymnal : 1850. In 1997, Mark Ludwig commissioned me to write a work based on a Shaker song. Ms. Rentz provided me with a lovely song, Grateful Remembrance, from her collection. The result was SEPTET: Variations on a Shaker Tune. Hancock Shaker Village is in many ways also a set of variations. It begins with a Prelude of my own devising. For the rest of the work I chose five songs from Ms. Rentz's book which provide a glimpse of a typical day for the inhabitants of this religious community. The first song, Pillar of Fire, greets the dawn and the rising sun. The second song, Glean with Care, is about the orchards and the gardens. The third, Sweet Home, is about the religious life and home. The fourth, Quick, a lively dance number, prays for God's power and grace. The last song, Farewell Dear Crossbearers, is for the dearly departed. Legacy is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission in 2007 by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor and rewritten for chamber orchestra in 2023. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate isquieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!” A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries brings the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressing the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCullough's book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato creating a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Score prints on legal size paper and parts on letter.

Throughout his career, Beethoven made dozens of concept sketches for many movements of symphonies, besides those for the completed nine compositions of that genre. In the period 1812-1816, mainly during the composition of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, there were three recurring such projected works in his sketchbooks, namely in D minor, E minor and E flat major respectively, and remarkably with sketches for more than one of their movements. The present symphony in late Classical style is based on those projects, making use of all their themes in a „combined†symphony in D minor and thus with peculiar tonal relationships. The incentive for this new work in the Classical idiom was in the quality and potential of some of the sketches, especially the one included now in the main theme of the slow movement. Some of the sketched material was subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal outlook, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and durations. This publication includes the score and parts. The sketchbook sources for each passage are mentioned at the bottom of the score. Total duration: 36 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. Silent Durations XXII (a Zen experience) was written for the French saxophone virtuoso, Daniel Kientzy. It features Drake Mabry's usage of silence as a musical architectural device. The solo part for bass saxophone highlights the tonal variations of this instrument in its various registers. The slow first movement is followed by a rapid and invigorating second movement. This is the first part of a trilogy of works based on the same source material. The other works are Concerto for Kientzy and Silent Concerto Durations which brings together the previous two compositions as one work. It would be conceivable to play Silent Durations XXII on other Bb saxophones. The solo part is included with the parts. The duration is 20'40.
