The work was written in celebration of the Mozart Year 2006.Unlike most recent piano concerti, this work is a concerto designed for small performingforces. It sits between typical chamber music and the typical piano concerto.The work was inspired by the various Mozart concerti (such as K. 449) which are oftenperformed with very small string sections. Thus, this concerto may be performed with as fewas single strings on each part, or a larger full string orchestraThe work is cast in one movement, containing two large sections (sub-movements).Structurally, the piece is a highly condensed version of Classical period symphonic form.The first section of the work is an exposition-development/sonata allegro combined with aslow movement. The second section is a combination of a triple-meter scherzo and a rondofinale.The musical material throughout derives tonally from the three notes of a D-major triad (D,F#, and A). Those three pitches serve as transformation centers for the work's material andalso plot the tonal areas of each section. The musical material of the work thus ranges fromhighly Classical melodies (although all original) and textures to more Romantic andmodernist elements that transform out of the initial material.

Having read many of the novels of Patrick O'Brian about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, I thought I would write music for a hypothetical film based on these novels. I started H.M.S. Surprise long before I learned that such a film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was actually being made. I had neither seen the movie nor heard the music used in it.H.M.S. Surprise consists of two movements for chamber orchestra. The first, In the Harbour, serves as an introducton. It portrays an existence which is peaceful and devoid of the difficulties to be encountered later. To be sure, there is some back-street intrigue and romantic entanglement, but life is generally pleasant. The second movement, At Sea, immediately follows the first and is considerably longer and more programmatic. It begins with typical adventure at sea music and soon becomes an imitation of a sailor's hornpipe, begun by the flute. Next comes the storm or the battle or perhaps both at the same time. Calm returns and the sailors give thanks by singing a hymn. Thanksgiving turns to celebration as everyone on deck plays one tune or another, including even the Captain, Jack Aubrey, who plays the violin. Later Captain Aubrey and his friend, Steven Maturin, physician, spy and cellist, play a duet before the music comes to a rousing conclusion.

BassI have been thinking about the plan to make an orchestral transcription of Goldberg Variations for a long time, as one of the examples of collective music-making, where most of the work would be typical of the style of a piano concerto, and would also include chamber ensembles both with a pianist and solo. Total duration (with some repetitions) - 50 min. Some variations are played: Piano + Orchestra (1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11,12,14,16,18,20,21,24,25,26,27.28,29) Orchestra only (19, 30), Brass only (4), Wood winds only (9), Brass + Wood winds only (22), Piano + Soloists from the Orchestra (7, 15, 17) Piano only (13) Prelude-Aria (Theme) begins with the pianist and after 8 measures the orchestra gradually turns on. The same Postlude-Aria theme at the end of the composition has an inversion orchestration, when everyone starts playing together (Piano + Orchestra) and then the orchestra gradually stops playing and only one pianist remains.Audio (mp3) incudes excerpts of Variations ## 1,2,4,5,6,7,11,14,19,20,21,22,28,29,30.

First of all, my enormous gratitude to Deborah Leath Rentz for the source material: Songs and the Spirit: Hancock Shaker Village's Musical Legacy, Volume I. Transcriptions of Hancock Hymnal : 1850. In 1997, Mark Ludwig commissioned me to write a work based on a Shaker song. Ms. Rentz provided me with a lovely song, Grateful Remembrance, from her collection. The result was SEPTET: Variations on a Shaker Tune. Hancock Shaker Village is in many ways also a set of variations. It begins with a Prelude of my own devising. For the rest of the work I chose five songs from Ms. Rentz's book which provide a glimpse of a typical day for the inhabitants of this religious community. The first song, Pillar of Fire, greets the dawn and the rising sun. The second song, Glean with Care, is about the orchards and the gardens. The third, Sweet Home, is about the religious life and home. The fourth, Quick, a lively dance number, prays for God's power and grace. The last song, Farewell Dear Crossbearers, is for the dearly departed. Published by BJE Music (A0.750953). Scarborough Fair is a traditional English folk song from the Middle Ages, referring to an old fair in Scarborough, Yorkshire. As a market fair, comprising of traders, merchants and other vendors, it started sometime in the 14th century and used to take place until the 18th century. The melody is in Dorian mode and is very typical of the Middle English period.This straightforward but useful arrangement is for a String Group or Orchestra with an optional part for Piano or Harp. Violin 1 is split into two parts - Melody and a Descant line. Harmony parts for Violins 2 and 3. Viola Part is doubled on Violin 4. The music has a thoroughly Celtic feel without being in any way stereotypical. Duration ca. 5:10Gabriel Fauré's Pavane Op. 50 is a short work originally composed for piano in 1887 but is better known in Fauré's version for orchestra and chorus. The piece is a pavane, a slow processional court dance that took hold in Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries and which the aristocracy used as a showcase for fancy ball gowns and ceremonial feasts. The piece's stately pace, which lends the melody its halting grace, has much to do with its frequently cited calming effect. Although Fauré described the report as carefully crafted but not otherwise important, it has become one of his most famous and commonly performed works. The Pavane is a typically frank and straightforward piece of music by Fauré, and it is around seven minutes long. The restrained use of harmony creates a delightful air of subtlety and simplicity. The piece has been reused by other composers, such as Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte.
