Arte Nova Music Lab #3005423. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742401). The four orchestral suites (called ouvertures by their author), BWV 1066–1069 are four suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. The name ouverture refers only in part to the opening movement in the style of the French overture, in which a majestic opening section in relatively slow dotted-note rhythm in duple meter is followed by a fast fugal section, then rounded off with a short recapitulation of the opening music. More broadly, the term was used in Baroque Germany for a suite of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by such an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual: Robin Stowell writes that Telemann's 135 surviving examples [represent] only a fraction of those he is known to have written;[1] Christoph Graupner left 85; and Johann Friedrich Fasch left almost 100. Bach did write several other ouverture (suites) for solo instruments, notably the Cello Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, which also exists in the autograph Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, the Keyboard Partita no. 4 in D, BWV 828, and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 for keyboard. The two keyboard works are among the few Bach published, and he prepared the lute suite for a Monsieur Schouster, presumably for a fee, so all three may attest to the form's popularity.Scholars believe that Bach did not conceive of the four orchestral suites as a set (in the way he conceived of the Brandenburg Concertos), since the sources are various, as detailed below.The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue includes a fifth suite, BWV 1070 in G minor. [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759) was a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition. Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order.[6] As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never composed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, with works such as Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remaining steadfastly popular. One of his four coronation anthems, Zadok the Priest (1727), composed for the coronation of George II, has been performed at every subsequent British coronation, traditionally during the sovereign's anointing. Another of his English oratorios, Solomon (1748), has also remained popular, with the Sinfonia that opens act 3 (known more commonly as The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba) featuring at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel composed more than forty opera serias in over thirty years, and since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and historically informed musical performance, interest in Handel's operas has grown. Duration: 8 min., Score 26 pp. Description: (According to the composer) Three Haiku and a Poem are just that, a four-song cycle for baritone voice and chamber orchestra. Based on 3 texts written by me and a fourth, a poem by the famous ancient Greek poet Sappho. The former were written when I was in grade school studying the well-known 5-7-5 syllable structure of Japanese haiku. I note with bemusement that I had cheated somewhat by providing leading titles which in themselves are at times longer than one of the tersely limited lines. The poem by Sappho was also one I had discovered in my own handwriting such that at first I did not remember who wrote such a splendid verse. All four were discovered, so to speak, by me from my more distant youth and set to music when I myself had just turned 21. There are four movements, Ina Cabin by the Sea - Indoors - An Evening Request - Alone. Total 8 minutes.

Based on 3 texts written by me and a fourth, a poem by the famous ancient Greek poet Sappho. The former were written when I was in grade school studying the well-known 5-7-5 syllable structure of Japanese haiku. I note with bemusement that I had cheated somewhat by providing leading titles which in themselves are at times longer than one of the tersely limited lines. The poem by Sappho was also one I had discovered in my own handwriting such that at first I did not remember who wrote such a splendid verse. All four were discovered, so to speak, by me from my more distant youth and set to music when I myself had just turned 21. There are four movements, Ina Cabin by the Sea - Indoors - An Evening Request - Alone. Total 8 minutes.

The Canticum Canticorum text also known as Song of Songs, the Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles, (Old Greek: Άσμα Ασμάτων, same meaning as song of songs). As David Berlo once beautifully put this into words: Meanings are in people … not in the messages …. The elements and structure of a language … are only symbols …. Meanings are not transmittable … Only messages are transmittable, and meanings are not in the message, they are in the message-users! Therefore, I needed to understand and interpret the text itself, even before I wanted to try setting it to the music. However, in order to understand the text correctly, one should comprehend the origin of the text and get to know its author(s), at first. In the case of Canticum Canticorum, both the author and the origin of the text are obscure. Furthermore, even the approximate date/century/era of the birth and the cultural context in which the text was created, are far from clear. According to the scholars, the creation of the text ranges from the tenth century B.C.; the era of Solomon, up to the first century B.C., and the origin of it considers from Indian, Tamil, or Ethiopic literature to Palestinian one. Because of these vast spectra of dates and cultures, I had to read and understand the text, compare with other sources, find similarities in other languages and cultures, hermeneutically interpret it and search for those non-written or metaphorical clues that may lead to unfasten the mystery has been attached to the text. In order to achieve the most accurate and faithful interpretation of the text I also had to answer few questions regarding the style, structure, medium, architecture and techniques of the music in relation to the text. I have used string orchestra and mixed choir to render the ideas, since that is among highly versatile instrumentations capable of providing small and delicate whispers, heavenly voices, and intonation changes that is hardly-reproducible by other mediums as well as thunderous sounds. Although Canticum Canticorum is single-movement work, but still possible to distinguish three different sections: the beginning choral part that is a long fugue in 5 voices with the material of serial music which helps orchestra to enter and grow, the a-capella middle section consists of two contrasting but invisibly related atmospheres and the third section – the recapitulation of the ideas already presented, in both the text and the music. The culmination of the work; 11-parts choral, takes place in the third section, somewhere near the end of the piece. Canticum Canticorum, for Grand String Orchestra & Mixed Choir, is dedicated to the genius composer of our time, Maestro Prof. dr. h.c. Krzysztof Penderecki.

Scriven originally wrote this poem anonymously, and it was not until 1880 that his name became known. The hymn's melody was composed by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868. Kantes del verdgel de granadas – Songs from the Pomegranate Garden A Judeo-Spanish song cycle for solo voice and chamber symphony orchestra Composer’s notes: Kantes del verdgel de granadas, or in its English translation: Songs from the Pomegranate Garden, is a cycle of five songs in the Judeo-Spanish dialect, also known as Ladino. The texts, based on folk-poetry, are magical, passionate, and encompass a wide range of human emotions and experiences. We can find in them love and longing, sorrow and death, lightheartedness and folly, as well as burning love and even sexual innuendo. The vocal part portrays different stories and a variety of human characters in each of the five songs. It, thus, ranges in expression from parlando secco to lirico espressivo. The role of the orchestra in this cycle is more than just an accompaniment; it converses with the voice, adds colors and ambience, and serves as a commentary over the sung text. Thus, the orchestral part is equal to, or at times even more predominant than the voice itself. The initiative to write this composition came in response to a specific cultural approach by which creativity based on traditional Judaic material should correspond to four stages in the artistic process: Exploration, Preservation, Interpretation, and Innovation (as translated by the Hebrew terms: חידוש – פירוש – שימור – חיפוש). The main idea behind this initiative was to conserve crucial elements within traditional Jewish folk music, and then, bring about their revival as art music through new contemporary interpretations. Thus, the musical arrangement is partially based on the traditional Ladino tunes and partially original. However, phrases based on old Ladino melodies are starkly modified and composed in such way to completely evoke personal imagery and interpretation. The songs I selected for the cycle were taken from the four-volume collection: Chants judéo-espagnols by Isaac Levy. My criteria for the selection was finding lesser-known melodies, yet most intriguing ones and with a strong Judeo-Spanish character. The five songs have various degrees of arrangement vs. original composition: songs 2 and 3, Mi korason and Entre las huertas, for example, are almost unchanged, while songs 1 and 4, Dos amantes and Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey, heavily combine the old Ladino romancero melodies with originally composed material. The concluding song (Nr. 5) is entirely original, but correspond stylistically to the Judeo-Spanish musical language. While all five songs are secular in nature, the ballad Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey (The King’s Son is Ill) has been traditionally sung - according to Isaac Levy - on the night of Tisha B’Av along the scroll of Eicha to bemoan the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
