Melodia Assoluta, (absolute melody) A solo cello piece created for the cellist Fances Marie Uiitti,living at that time in Rome. She played the work in Naples, Italy and Holland and elsewhere and gave the US premiere in Buffalo, NY. The idea of an endless melody going on forever was behind the illusion of this work,as if you came into a room, and it was always already there.A certain solitary melodic melancholy was observed by some when it was first played,as an antidote to the then 'New Music',which created a senasation in Naples in 1980.The times being what they were.

Program note: Canções e Sambinhas is the third of a triptych of compositions written for my friend, the enormously gifted cellist, Andrés DÃaz. The first was Eurydice, a tone poem on the Orpheus myth for cello and orchestra, and the second was La Chimera Fantastica for the DÃaz Trio. Canções e Sambinhas is in four movements. I. Canção de amor ... II. Sambinha bachiana ... III. Valsa lenta ... IV. Mais uma vêz ... Having lived in Brazil during my teen-age years, I inevitably continue to return to the wonderful music of that country for inspiration: the chôros of Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinginha, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first movement begins with a slow, dark introduction before the love song emerges .... The second movement is a lively samba. As the title indicates, it is a little samba infused with Bach-like counterpoint, although a bit crazier. Villa-Lobos might find this amusing .... The third movement is a slow meditation for the cello on a passacaglia-like theme in the piano. The last movement, Mais uma vêz (meaning One Mo' Time in English), is a samba like the second movement, but it is set more homophonically, more dance-like in character .... Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787296). Composed in 2013 for Suzanne Mueller in commemoration of her tens years as Summer Artist-in-Residence at Old Westbury Gardens, Old Westbury, NY. The opening theme counts up the decade by interval, starting with intervals of one (unison), major second, major third, perfect fourth and perfect fifth. After exploring the ups and downs of these first five years, in measure eight the count starts over and this time continues with a major sixth, major seventh, octave, major ninth and major tenth. After exploring this additional territory, a melodic section celebrates the accomplishment of ten years, which is recognized by gifts of diamonds, and this piece is my diamond for Suzanne. Studio recorded (also by Micah Claffey) in 2015. Has also been performed by Marilyn de Oliveira (Assistant Principal Cello of the Oregon Symphony) and Diane Chaplin. Duration: Around 8 minutes; one movement. Level: Great for a student recital piece; popular with college students. A rich, expressive, melodic piece written idiomatically for the cello's voice; easy for a performer to personalize. Appropriate for intermediate students, but certainly challenging enough to be of interest to professionals as well. Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it.
