Duration: Around 8 minutes; one movement. Level: Great for a student recital piece; popular with college students. A rich, expressive, melodic piece written idiomatically for the cello's voice; easy for a performer to personalize. Appropriate for intermediate students, but certainly challenging enough to be of interest to professionals as well. Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it. The Dardanoi, the descendants of Dardanus, formed a contingent among Troy's allies in the Trojan War. The House of Dardanus, of which Dardanus was the founder, played a significant role in the lead-up to the war. The city of Troy, founded by Dardanus's descendant, Ilus, was central to the myths surrounding the Trojan War. Additionally, Aeneas, a prominent figure in the Trojan War, was referred to as a Dardanian and was destined to save the House of Dardanus from extinction. Therefore, Dardanus's lineage and the founding of Troy are the critical connections between Dardanus and the Trojan War.Ancestry and Founder: Dardanus was the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Electra. He was the mythical founder of Dardania on the Hellespont and the ancestor of the Dardanians of the Troad and, through Aeneas, of the Romans.Migration and Settlement: According to mythology, Dardanus fled from Arcadia to the island of Samothrace and then to the Troad, where Teucer, the ruler of Phrygia, hospitably received him. He married Teucer's daughter Bateia and became the founder of the royal house of Troy.Family and Descendants: Dardanus married Chryse, with whom he fathered two sons, Idaeus and Deimas. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

Tempos are recommended guidance only- they work at any number of tempos (except for the allegro in movement 2). Otherwise, play them as you feel them. Movement 1 is really a set of variations on the main theme in D minor. It explores a moderate range of keys and rhythms. Movement 2 starts with an adagio that can be played quite freely, ascending from Cmaj up thru various keys, leading to an allegro/presto dance-like piano theme in Dmaj. Much room for tempo/dynamics interpretation then ending with a brief restatement of the adagio theme in a new key, followed by a mad rush up the cello to a high, quiet E, with small sighs to end the piece. Movements 3, 4 and 5 would be good performance pieces for students (melodically solid with multiple harmonic shifts, moderate bowing and fingering challenges and engaging rhythms).

After exploring the ups and downs of these first five years, in measure eight the count starts over and this time continues with a major sixth, major seventh, octave, major ninth and major tenth. After exploring this additional territory, a melodic section celebrates the accomplishment of ten years, which is recognized by gifts of diamonds, and this piece is my diamond for Suzanne.
