Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. This version of When I’m Sixty-Four is arranged in a suitable key and range for solo Cello. Piano/Guitar chords are also included above the stave.Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. I'm waiting for the victorious one] In my mind there were initially several possible interpretations of the poem My original thoughts were that le vainqueur means the conquering Christ and that the woman is waiting all her life with flowers before a church - waiting in vain for her saviour another possibility is that the woman is waiting for the winner of her affections it could even be that le vainqueur refers to the invading German army but this would not explain the fact that she waits all her life but, finally, as Raphaèle Larazoni suggests, (and more plausibly in view of other poems by Prévert) the vainqueur is simply the winner in a war - there is never really a winner in a war, so the woman waits all her life in vain.
