The transition introduces pentatonic and synthetic materials that dissipate into a Lydian chord. The Lydian mode provides materials for the lyrical secondary theme section. A closing section revisits elements of the synthetic scale from the transition. After a repeat of the exposition, the development section begins agitato, fragmenting and transposing various diminutions of the primary motive. This is interrupted by a double augmentation and then a bariolage passage leading to declamatory statements of the primary theme transposed eventually to the subdominant. After modulating the transition materials, the secondary theme is developed in the subdominant. This time, the music is adjusted to explore a quotation of the first measure of Bach’s Cello Suite I. This treatment dissolves into a two-part transition (quasi-spiccato), leading to a final development of the Lydian motive, this time in double stops. A final transition section provides the thematic impetus for the third movement. The recapitulation ensues with the re-transition somewhat truncated and the secondary theme transposed to the tonic. A coda section dissipates excess energy while developing Lydian ideas in preparation for a quiet closing that repeats the now-broken Lydian chord.

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

And yet it would be doubtful that the result would sound authentic. Neither I was interested in composing some sounding touristic postcards. These melodies reflect, yes, how a thankful being sees the Armenian from outside. And this is what grants them legitimacy.About the titles:The general title of the piece, Paregamutiún, is translatable as friendship. Sometimes it is transliterated Baregamutyun (as a certain station of the subway in Yerevan). The single titles of each piece refers to a lake, a mountain, a mythical patriarch and a tree of Armenia:1) Sevanavank: Monastery of the Black Lake, founded in 874. The name Sevan means literally Black Van, referring to a lake called Van. It is said that long ago the Armenians came from areas next to the lake Van towards the lake Sevan, they noticed that its waters were dark, almost black, but they reminded them of the lake Van, and therefore called it black Van: Sevan.2) Hayk is the patriarch of the foundational myth of the Armenian nation, and the original name of the country (Hayastán: land of the Armenians); some sources affirm that he was great great grandson or great-great-great grandson of Noah.3) Dziranà Dzar: apricot tree, the Armenian national fruit. Dzar is tree and dzirán is apricot, the obvious phonetic similitude seems to underline a strong semantic proximity between both concepts. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Published by POLYHYMNIA Ediciones musicales (A0.1029293). Perfil del ánima (Profile of the anima), Op. 86 is a solo cello piece written in a single movement. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?†The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.

When listening to this piece I imagine how a  shadow traipse behind it's person; and how it'll disappear in an instant when the light has gone. This piece make me think of Peter Pan's shadow specifcally trying to remove himself from the boy,  and tip toe away into the night. Although the audience may think that Peter Pan's shadow should have a more light-hearted tune. I think the opposite, I like to think of it has more of a lament; Peter Pan's  shadow has tried countless times to escape and has never succeeded. The shadow  has lost count of how many times he's tried to set himself free, and is rapidly losing hope.  All he can do for some resemblance of freedom is fade away when light is no longer around.

With a little bit of creativity, and a lot of knowledge and understanding about how the instrument works - and how students learn - I have created this book. I hope you will love it just as much as I do, and that it will help you build a good foundation for your cello playing. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: This lesson book was created with a new perspective in mind. My hope is, that this way of learning, will make it easier to learn to play the cello. I have chosen to include a few chapters in the beginning of the book, where you will play on open strings. That will help you establish a good, basic understanding for how the cello should sound. It will also give you the opportunity to build up strength in the left hand slowly – and concentrate on getting a good, basic bowing technique. I have included small chapters with music theory, that I find important in order to understand how the instrument works. The cello doesn't have any keys or frets to help you play in tune, so knowing a few tips and tricks will help you tremendously. As opposed to most cello lesson books, the first finger you will learn to use here is the 4th finger. The 4th finger is your little finger and usually the least strong finger of them all. Starting with 4th finger has 2 very important advantages: • When you use the 4th finger – especially in the beginning – you will use the other 3 fingers to help push the string down into the fingerboard. That will help you establish a good, healthy hand position for the left hand. And when you start with 4th finger, using the other 3 fingers will feel so easy! • 4th finger in the first position is the same note (an octave higher) as the open string below. It gives you the opportunity to use the open string to know if you play in tune. Once you have gone through this book you should be able to play with the bow, by plucking the strings (pizzicato) and use 1st, 3rd and 4th finger on the left hand. That means that you should be able to play songs in G Major and D Major in one octave. The last few chapters include duets for two cellos. I have chosen to include the duets to make it more fun to play and to start developing the students ability play chamber music. It is wonderful to be able to play an instrument, and playing with other people adds an extra dimension to that. Love, live, play! Julie.
