Paregamutiún (Friendship): Four melodies of Armenian connotations for cello solo.I am not Armenian, but these melodies could be: it is an invented folklore. Nevertheless, I never wanted to compose an imitation of real Armenian music; for that I should live in Armenia a few years, learn the language, soak in a couple of millennia of culture and impregnate myself with the current problems. And yet it would be doubtful that the result would sound authentic. Neither I was interested in composing some sounding touristic postcards. These melodies reflect, yes, how a thankful being sees the Armenian from outside. And this is what grants them legitimacy.About the titles:The general title of the piece, Paregamutiún, is translatable as friendship. Sometimes it is transliterated Baregamutyun (as a certain station of the subway in Yerevan). The single titles of each piece refers to a lake, a mountain, a mythical patriarch and a tree of Armenia:1) Sevanavank: Monastery of the Black Lake, founded in 874. The name Sevan means literally Black Van, referring to a lake called Van. It is said that long ago the Armenians came from areas next to the lake Van towards the lake Sevan, they noticed that its waters were dark, almost black, but they reminded them of the lake Van, and therefore called it black Van: Sevan.2) Hayk is the patriarch of the foundational myth of the Armenian nation, and the original name of the country (Hayastán: land of the Armenians); some sources affirm that he was great great grandson or great-great-great grandson of Noah.3) Dziranà Dzar: apricot tree, the Armenian national fruit. Dzar is tree and dzirán is apricot, the obvious phonetic similitude seems to underline a strong semantic proximity between both concepts. The letter Dz is a complex phoneme similar to a smooth th.4) Masis is the Armenian name of mount Ararat, where -according to the Bible- ended up Noah's Arch after the Flood (Genesis 8:4).www.JuanMariaSolare.com

Duration: Around 8 minutes; one movement. Level: Great for a student recital piece; popular with college students. A rich, expressive, melodic piece written idiomatically for the cello's voice; easy for a performer to personalize. Appropriate for intermediate students, but certainly challenging enough to be of interest to professionals as well. Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it. Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

This makes it immediately more accessible to earlier-level players. The melody also features twice. First, it is presented quite low in register, entirely in the first position; Second, it is raised up one octave to where it is found in the fourth position and lower.The cue notes were written with the intent to be played. So, have at them if you so choose. If you are intermediate level all of the notes on the page are manageable.This is a cello only version.If you are still working out some technique, leave out the cue notes (and higher melody—the second verse. The melody could be played twice in either the low or high register depending on your level.) Later, come back for those notes and passages that are more difficult after achieving the requisite skills.In general, I think that Metallica’s songs lend well to the cello’s register. When listening to this piece I imagine how a  shadow traipse behind it's person; and how it'll disappear in an instant when the light has gone. This piece make me think of Peter Pan's shadow specifcally trying to remove himself from the boy,  and tip toe away into the night. Although the audience may think that Peter Pan's shadow should have a more light-hearted tune. I think the opposite, I like to think of it has more of a lament; Peter Pan's  shadow has tried countless times to escape and has never succeeded. The shadow  has lost count of how many times he's tried to set himself free, and is rapidly losing hope.  All he can do for some resemblance of freedom is fade away when light is no longer around.
