Instrumentation: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, 1 bass clarinet.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbrevia.

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. In the Mood was a huge hit for the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1940, but the melody for In the Mood had been around in different versions with different bands for at least a decade before. But it was the Glenn Miller version that grabbed the public’s attention, becoming almost the soundtrack to the Second World War. In the Mood has never lost its appeal and has been recognised as culturally significant by the Library of Congress. In 1951 In the Mood became the first piece of music to be played by a computer.This arrangement of In the Mood is written with accessibility in mind. It is arranged for Clarinet Quartet or Choir; that is for three Bb Clarinets, plus Bass Clarinet. There is also an alternative part 3 for Alto Clarinet in Eb. This arrangement aims to deliver the big band sound with a smaller group. The solos from the original Glenn Miller recording are transcribed and notated in full, though players may prefer their own improvisations. This arrangement is ideal for smaller groups and combos looking to add this perennial favourite to their repertoire.The single pdf file you download contains both the full score and the individual parts. The drop bear is said to be bigger than a usual koala, and is a carnivorous animals that can drop from high branches on unsuspecting animals. Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. Two versions of this work were published by the Adolphe Sax puublishing company: a version for voice and organ and a version for voice with Alto Saxophone, Sax Valved Trombone and Bass Saxhorn, an interesting combination which is perhaps not as easy to find as it was in Sax's showroom, where the piece was likely performed to show the qualities of Sax's instruments. These versions are also published by Musik Fabrik in seperate editions. This current version was arranged using the first edition of the trio version as its source, and the saxophone and voice parts remain essentially as in the original, with some editorial dynamic changes. The version may be performed in three possible ways: either as a piece for Clarinet Quartet, as a work with Voice and Clarinet Trio, or as a work with Voice and clarinet quartet, with Clarinet 1 doubling the voice. A voical part (in C) is included with the set.

(Where Are These Gleeful Shepherds Going?) is based upon a tune attributed to Marc-Antoine Charpentier and brilliantly showcases the timbral palette of the clarinet quartet. The second movement, Entre le Boeuf et l'Ane Gris (Between the Cow and the Gray Donkey) is somber and deeply moving. The third movement, Il est Né, Le Devin Enfant (He is Born, The Holy Child) is a familiar tune enhanced wth masterful Baroque style counterpoint. The third movement, Un Flambeau, Jeannette Isabelle (Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella) is given fresh exuberance with asymmetric meter reminiscent of works by David Brubeck.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The second movement is a gracious waltz that updates the requisite dance movement (which in Mozart's time would have been a stately minuet) to a more contemporary dance form. In any case, the waltz is almost deceptively complex. The harmonic shifts are numerous and often sudden and always deftly crafted. The texture is somewhat of a departure from the previous movement in that there is a discernible lightness of touch in the waltz. This arrangement for clarinet quartet (Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

My father enjoyed singing, particularly when the family went on road trips. One of our favorite songs that he sang was 'The Far North Land.' Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I later transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts told me they recalled my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as 'Fletch's song.' It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. The tune is also known in the U.K. as The Road to the Isles. The arrangement for string quartet was premiered by the OdeonQuartet at Seattle's Town Hall on October 21, 2003. The arrangement for clarinet quartet was made in 2013 for the Livas Quartet. The arrangment for string orchestra is available from Imagine Music Publishing.

Here we have an abridged version of ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s famous ‘The Four Seasons’ suite, arranged for a clarinet quartet. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the first clarinet slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end.In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them.Enjoy yourselves!
