In 2019, during my stay at Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goiás, Brazil, I went in search of the flavor of the local coffee. Xinguara was recommended to me, which inspired me to compose ten songs, this being the first composition in this series. In this version for Clarinet Quartet, the rhythmic and harmonic elements of these two genres, the baião and the maxixe, are mixed and result in an interesting conversation between the instruments, alternating their accompaniment and solo functions. A fun, uncomplicated piece that gives the listener the energy of a café in the Brazilian cerrado. Try it !!!

The theme proper can be heard in the fugue subject of the first movement. The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa. I. Europe: An Enlightenment Fugue II. Asia: A Gagaku Serenade III. A New World Sarabande IV. The song was the first track recorded during the sessions for the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967),and was intended for inclusion on the album. Instead, with the group under record-company pressure to release a single, it was issued in February 1967 as a double A-side with "Penny Lane". The combination reached number two in the United Kingdom, breaking the band's four-year run of chart-topping singles there, while "Strawberry Fields Forever" peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in America. "Strawberry Fields Forever" is one of the defining works of the psychedelic rock genre and has been covered by many artists. The Beatles made a promotional film clip for the song that is similarly recognised for its influence in the medium of music video. The Strawberry Fields memorial in New York's Central Park is named after the song. It is arranged for clarinet quartet: 3 clts and bass clt.
