My father enjoyed singing, particularly when the family went on road trips. One of our favorite songs that he sang was 'The Far North Land.' Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I later transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts told me they recalled my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as 'Fletch's song.' It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. The tune is also known in the U.K. as The Road to the Isles. The arrangement for string quartet was premiered by the OdeonQuartet at Seattle's Town Hall on October 21, 2003. The arrangement for clarinet quartet was made in 2013 for the Livas Quartet. The arrangment for string orchestra is available from Imagine Music Publishing.

He wrote his setting of Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), derived from Goethe's Faust, when he was 17 years old. Originally for voice and piano, Gretchen provides a first-person account of the feelings of its titular character as she works at her spinning wheel while reflecting on her conflicted emotions regarding Faust. The constant motion in the accompaniment part, echoing the tireless spinning of the wheel and the regular fall of her foot on the pedal, churns over a swiftly changing series of harmonies, representing both how swept away she is by her feelings for Faust but also her pain of not being able to be with him. The wheel's only pause comes when Gretchen reflects on Faust's kiss; it is the only moment in the song where she completely forgets her task at hand, so wrapped up is she in her tumultuous thoughts. As the musical patterns of the spinning wheel slowly but insistently return, Gretchen's composure is regained, and she returns to her task. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the spinning wheel pattern across all four parts, and Gretchen's lyrical melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

His Die Forelle (The Trout), based on a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, tells the story of a clever and happy fish that is eventually caught by a duplicitous fisherman who muddies the water in order to trick the fish into being snared on his line. Schubert's playful accompanimental figures, originally set in the piano part, have long been interpreted as either the babbling of the brook or the gleeful swimming and leaping of the fish, and the sung melody has the natural strophic cadence of a folk song. It is only in the moment where the fisherman agitates the water and our protagonist fish is nearing his doom that we hear the harmony become darker and more complex; otherwise the material is bright, sunny, and full of playful chromaticism. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the accompanimental motive across all four parts, and the original sung melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

It was during these years that Dvorak composed his Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and the composition of his American Quartet (String Quartet No. 12) followed not long after. The quartet includes many of the same hallmarks of the symphony, particularly the liberal use of the pentatonic scale and evocation of folk songs and spirituals. This transcription includes a few judicious cuts that make it a good option for student or amateur clarinet ensembles looking for a challenging but rewarding chamber work.

Extinction Events (1st movement - Buzzy Delights (honey bees) by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players. This is the first movement only...the others may be purchased separately: It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved.Buzzy Delights (honey bees) – Bees are industrious and play a key role in propagating plants, while the queen stays in the hive in her pentagonal glory and sings a song in 5/4 time. Honey Bees have been having issues with some types of insecticides and diseases and whole areas of hives have died off.
