During the early 1960s, Clark Gesner had begun writing songs based on Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters, but was unable to get permission from United Feature Syndicate to use the characters in his songs. Eventually Gesner sent Schulz a demo recording of some of the songs and soon had permission to properly record them, which he did in 1966. At the time, Gesner had no plans for a musical based on this concept album, however, producer Arthur Whitelaw, who would later go on to write another musical based on Peanuts entitled Snoopy! The Musical, encouraged Gesner to turn the album into a musical and it premiered Off-Broadway the following year. This lovely little song comes right at the end of the show, when Charlie Brown realises that today hasn't been so bad, and he's done a lot of things that make him happy; as he expresses what makes him happy, everyone around him, touched by his love of life, begin to express what makes them happy as well. :).

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Extinction Events (3rd movement - Walrus Jump by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players. This is the third movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Walruses are huge aquatic animals who are powerful and swift in the water, but when they jump onto sea ice to rest, they are anything but graceful. They are a bit comical, really. Subsistence hunters in the Bering Strait of Alaska are having trouble with their Spring hunts due to gradual warming of the arctic waters. Sea ice is getting thinner and the Walruses they rely upon to live are getting too far away. This Walrus Jump music is a pretty happy sounding boogie woogie that shows signs of musical distress as it goes on.

Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work lasting about 11 minutes and is for very advanced players. The movements are: Buzzy Delights (Honey Bees), It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar).Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved.Each movement will also be made available separately as time goes by....just waiting for special days like World Wildlife Day!

Honey Bees have been having issues with some types of insecticides and diseases and whole areas of hives have died off. In this piece I imagined a Jaguar slowly stalking its prey, moving silently on velvet paws. She moves carefully but with barely hidden energy, pausing, then freezing, then suddenly pouncing. Surprise! Sadly, the Dies Irae music plays on. .

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955731). Wave is one of those marvelous Latin numbers for which Antonio Carlos Jobim is so famous. The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for clarinets (with that melody line descending into the chalumeau register being especially effective) and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.

It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. The theme song from Halloween ranks as one of the creepiest movie theme songs ever. It was first composed in 1978, and is still creeping people out just as strong as ever. Critics have grumbled about it being too simple, but that\\\'s what makes this piece so memorable.
Set at a time signature of 5/4 throughout, this arrangement is scored for Bb clarinets. The 4th part can be played by either a \\\"regular\\\" clarinet or a bass, or a contrabass.
It goes without saying that this piece should be played in a cold and mechanical manner. It definitely isn\\\'t a \\\"pretty\\\" piece. The lower instruments should be strong, while the upper instruments tip toe on top. If you would like to add a little more interest to the piece, an egg shaker could be played at every beat.
This will give your audience the heebie jeebies.
This piece is simple enough for musicians with intermediate skill.
