Piece set in the musical genre originated in Cuba in the first half of the 19th century: the Habanera. In Cuba during the 19th century, it became an important genre, the first written music to be rhythmically based on an African rhythm pattern and the first Cuban dance to gain international popularity, the progenitor of danzón, mambo and cha-cha-cha, with a characteristic habanera rhythm and sung lyrics. Outside Cuba, the Cuban contradanza became known as the habanera and that name was adopted in Cuba itself subsequent to its international popularity in the later 19th century.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955731). Wave is one of those marvelous Latin numbers for which Antonio Carlos Jobim is so famous. The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for clarinets (with that melody line descending into the chalumeau register being especially effective) and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.

The song was recorded in a different key than the final recording; it was sped up at the request of McCartney to make his voice sound younger. It prominently features a trio of clarinets (two regular clarinets and one bass clarinet) throughout. I think I have made a fairly accurate transcription of the recording for standard clarinet quartet. 1st clarinet takes the melody throughout, and is joined in verse 3 with another clarinet Clarinets 2 and 3 mostly sustain, but take the counter melody in the choruses. Bass provides a steady rhythm throughout. Fun for every player. Enjoy. Â
