Many scholarly, and some frankly impenetrable, analyses have been written on the subject of Contrapunctus 7, all available on the internet somewhere (mainly if you can't sleep!). So I would simply say that the motif throughout is stretched, further elongated, scrunched up, placed on different beats, played upsidedown, sideways, shortened, further shortened, over the bar, under the bar, off to the bar(!), and so on, it shouldn't work!! But of course it really does, really! I've known this piece for many years, but it was not until I began unravelling it for this Clarinet version that I must again doff my cap to old J.S. and his enduring genius! Â

This unusual piece by Eugene Gigout is simplistic and complex, plain and colourful, in other words as we say in the Uk '... its bit like Marmite!' ie. you either like it or you don't! Fugal in style and very melodic with a modern feel harmonically. And I like Marmite!! Gigout was born in Nancy in France and became a pupil Saint-Saens. He mainly wrote for the Organ, his Toccata is still played today and very popular as an encore piece. He was also Organist at the St Augustin Church in Paris for 62 years!

In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement includes alternative parts for clarinet in E-flat and alto clarinet in E-flat. The Royal Court of Aquitaine is an original composition for SATB Saxophone Quartet or Clarinet Quartet and is dedicated to the Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet who are based in Pittsburgh, in appreciation for having me as one of their guests at their 20th Annual Saxophone and Woodwind Workshop held at California University of Pennsylvania, June 27- July 2, 2010. I began working on the piece just prior to attending the workshop and completed it a few days after returning home to Mississauga, Ontario. The title was suggested by my lovely bride after she first heard the piece. Raised in a family where medieval history was a frequent topic of discussion since her father was a Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, my wife says she had a vision of Eleanor of Aquitaine arriving by ship in England with her entourage, while her husband King Henry II awaited her. Since I had no title in mind, and after having researched the medieval Queen, I decided my wife’s suggestion was particularly apt. The piece is in ternary form, with the first theme in C Dorian mode, perhaps depicting Eleanor’s strength and conviction as a monarch. This leads into the second section in Eb major, which is more lyrical and calming in nature, suggesting her influence over the Courtly Love Movement while residing in Poitiers. The first section then returns to bring the piece to a balanced conclusion. The performance time is 3:15. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Super Mario Bros was a super popular Nintendo game, but I think the song was even more so. Back in the 80's, game music was written to attract attention to the game itself, rather than enhance the player's experience during the game. It was more or less, just a catchy tune. However, when Koji Kondo wrote the music to Super Mario Bros, he created it as an active part of the game. This idea would help change game music forever.
I feel as if I don't need to give any comments on how to play this piece, but I will say that in the interest of not inundating the sheet music with dots everywhere, this song should be played staccato throughout the piece unless otherwise noted.
This piece has a lot of syncopation, but it is repetitive, so musicians with intermediate skills should be able to play this piece.
Scored for 3 Bb clarinets and alto or bass (or both!).

The theme song from Halloween ranks as one of the creepiest movie theme songs ever. It was first composed in 1978, and is still creeping people out just as strong as ever. Critics have grumbled about it being too simple, but that\\\'s what makes this piece so memorable.
Set at a time signature of 5/4 throughout, this arrangement is scored for Bb clarinets. The 4th part can be played by either a \\\"regular\\\" clarinet or a bass, or a contrabass.
It goes without saying that this piece should be played in a cold and mechanical manner. It definitely isn\\\'t a \\\"pretty\\\" piece. The lower instruments should be strong, while the upper instruments tip toe on top. If you would like to add a little more interest to the piece, an egg shaker could be played at every beat.
This will give your audience the heebie jeebies.
This piece is simple enough for musicians with intermediate skill.
