Extinction Events (1st movement - Buzzy Delights (honey bees) by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players. This is the first movement only...the others may be purchased separately: It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved.Buzzy Delights (honey bees) – Bees are industrious and play a key role in propagating plants, while the queen stays in the hive in her pentagonal glory and sings a song in 5/4 time. Honey Bees have been having issues with some types of insecticides and diseases and whole areas of hives have died off. I know that the music of Sigfrid Karg-Elert is probably not well known amongst the Woodwind fraternity, however when the notes are extracted from the Organ scores, a completely new light is shed upon the music that he wrote. As with the other pieces by Karg-Elert on this site that I have arranged for Clarinet groups in particular, there seems to be no chord extension barred from the ongoing harmonies, elaborate rhythms on the inner parts and such invention! Maybe with a couple of hearings you will get what I mean! I'm sure that in a generous acoustic, this music would sound glorious.... just like the Organ...only different!!MP3 also available to download.

Here we have an abridged version of ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s famous ‘The Four Seasons’ suite, arranged for a clarinet quartet. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the first clarinet slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end.In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them.Enjoy yourselves!

Unlike Joplin's characteristic rags, Bethena captures the sentimental side of the composer. Dedicated to his late wife, Freddie, the Bethena Concert Waltz is mournful while capturing the joy of their brief marriage. This arrangement is suitable for professional recitals, but can be performed by younger musicians as well. Optional lower octave notes are included in the 1st clarinet part, which goes up to a high F briefly but is not necessary. The first and second clarinet parts are of equal difficulty, with the third and bass part being slightly easier. A bass clarinet with extension below Eb is not necessary, but in a few measures optional low notes are included. A great addition to a recital, wedding, or program focusing on African American or American composers. Total length is approximately 4:30. A real crowd pleaser!

One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Walruses are huge aquatic animals who are powerful and swift in the water, but when they jump onto sea ice to rest, they are anything but graceful. They are a bit comical, really. Subsistence hunters in the Bering Strait of Alaska are having trouble with their Spring hunts due to gradual warming of the arctic waters. Sea ice is getting thinner and the Walruses they rely upon to live are getting too far away. This Walrus Jump music is a pretty happy sounding boogie woogie that shows signs of musical distress as it goes on.

Clarinet Quartet - 3 x Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet The words of this hymn were inspired by a series of tragedies in the life of hymn writer, Horatio Spafford. He lost his 4 year old son in a Chicago fire in 1871 and two years later he lost all 4 of his daughters when the ship, SS Ville du Havre, sank while they were travelling from the USA to England. Only his wife survived the journey. He wrote these words while he travelled alone to meet his grieving wife shortly afterwards.The hymn was first published in 1876, set to a tune by Philip Bliss which is still known as Ville du Havre. It exists in versions with either 4 or 5 verses. This arrangement for clarinet quartet consists of 5 verses, each with slightly altered harmonisation or articulation, to suit the words. For example in verse 3 the words Nailed to the Cross are accompanied by accented stabbing chords. Verse 5 has some trumpet-like fanfares to match the reference to the Trump[et] Calls in the text. The words to the hymn are shown in the score and in the first clarinet part, so the arrangement can be used in a worship setting. Verses can be omitted to suit your liturgical needs. Similarly, if the arrangement is used for an instrumental performance, verses can be omitted as required. Duration: 5’ to 5’30 Â

The theme proper can be heard in the fugue subject of the first movement. The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa. I. Europe: An Enlightenment Fugue II.
