It is based in symmetry of intervals and their gradual transformation. It is a musical equivalent of someone’s experience by attending the Paraklitikos Canon to Virgin Mary a very famous ritual which takes place in Eastern Orthodox Church at August. The work is divided in 7 parts:a. Ritual,b. Prayer Ι (bird song),c. Offer,e. Dance (mystic waltz),d. Prayer ΙΙ (recitativo),e. Expectation,f. The Miracle.In its stage form, the work, includes an introduction with two monastery talanton, (a percussive piece of wood, monks use for ceremonial calling) sounding in a canon before the sound of a censer. A narrator recites hymns (troparion) from the ceremony between the parts.The work draw the attention of exquisite performers as Michel Arrignion, Stathis Kiosoglou (first and second performance in Athens in 1991-1992) and Giannis Sabrovalakis who under the artistic direction of Theodor Antoniou gave a performance at the 3d Sacred Festival in island Patmos (2003). Duration: approx 4:00The Cry of Beltane for solo oboe was written for and premiered by an advanced, young oboe student, Leo Sherwood, and first performed in May 2017 as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild’s Creativity: Learning through Experience program. The piece was the program opener and is ideally suited to open a recital.Beltane is the anglicized name of the Celtic festival held on May Day, a pagan festival signifying the beginning of summer. The piece is intended to evoke a ritualistic, call to summer; a crying out and calling forth of sun and growth. The piece should sound aggressive and the oboe should aim to make the most of its harder-edged timbre, rather than its lyrical qualities. While the notation is precise, the piece should sound as if the performer had improvised it. The bigger the contrast in dynamics the better.Joseph Hollings (ASCAP) is a composer, arranger and music educator, and has taught music to students of all levels for over twenty five years. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including in London's West End, and have been recorded by the Onyx Brass Quintet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle at King's College London, worked for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and established Really Nearly Records with the ever-imaginative Tim Ten Yen. Part of a series of fantasies for solo instrument, this lyrical monologue for oboe is in a modernist style: Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, he has a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the Federal University of Bahia. He began composing at the age of thirteen and became a professor at the age of nineteen. He has studied in courses and seminars about music and film in several official institutions with Ennio Morricone, Ettore Scolla, Giussepe Tornatore, E. Polizzi, Radamés Gnatalli, Max Rostal, Oilliam Lanna, S. Vianna (Accademia Chigiana di Siena, Reale Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Arts Academy of Rome, Royal University College of Music Stockholm, UFMG, UFBA), among others. He currently works as a composer-conductor and cultural producer, as well as a professor at the Clóvis Salgado Foundation, Palácio das Artes, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in addition to offering lectures and workshops in various institutions both in Brazil and abroad. His first teacher wa his father, Sebastião Vianna (assistant and reviser for the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos), and most recently furthered his studies in other institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden. He has also published over forty articles both in Brazil and Europe. Viana has received 25 awards in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the USA, including the Prix de Composition at the First Composition Competition Festin Choral 2013 in the city of Billère (France), first prize at the Susanville Symphony Composition Competition 2012 (USA), first prize in the international composition contest of Lys Music Orchestra 2001 in Belgium, first prize and the audience prize in the Lambersart 2006 International Contest of Composition in France. To date, he has composed 315 musical pieces for voices, chamber, symphonic as well as electronic instruments. Urban Arboretum was written for Online Summer Composition Workshop with Jenni Brandon in July 2020 with oboist Lindabeth Binkley as the resident artist. Duration: 5 minutes Program notes: Kew Gardens in Queens, New York, is where the composer settles, which offers a delicate balance between the city and nature. Each piece portrays the impression of the specific trees in the park, which the composer grew over time getting acquainted with them. Solitary Yew stands alone in the park, planted by the park planner not too long ago. The evergreen tree looks like it does not belong there but still maintaining a straight, symmetrical posture. Later in the summer, its seed cones develop into a berry-like red structure. Twin Japanese Maples welcomes the composer every time he comes home. In spring, it grows beautiful bright-green leaves, with 5 or 7 pointed lobes. From autumn to winter, its leaves grow into burning red color for a while, then fall. Triangular Oaks are probably the oldest of the park. Three oak's layout creates vast shadow areas on the lawn where kids play with balls, kicking or throwing it back and forth. A morse-code rhythm: the S.O.S distress call ( . . . - - - . . . ) and the hollow-sounding intervals of the perfect fourth and the perfect fifth form central themes early in the piece, which is about the struggle through life's chaos. Published by Wadley Publications (A0.983174). The title of Sonar’s Riddle is an anagram of Dr. Daniel Ross, and stands as a tribute to a musician known for both his kindness and humor. Dr. Daniel F. Ross (1944-2019) was a Professor of Music at Arkansas State University, where he taught the double reed studio from 1968 to 2018. During his illustrious career, he became known as not only a world-class musician, but an innovator in the field of reed-making with his Ross Gouging Machine. As a performer, he served as Principal Oboist with the Arkansas Symphony and performed with the North Arkansas Symphony, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Tupelo Symphony, Delta Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Nashville Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, and the St. Louis Chamber Music Society. He was a frequent soloist with the Forum Sinfonia of Krakow, Poland, touring with them in the United Stated and Europe. He held the title of Visiting Professor of Oboe at the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland and has been a soloist with the St. Petersburg and Moscow Philharmonic orchestras in Russia. As a teacher, Dr. Ross stressed the importance of expression. For him, being a musician was an extension of being human. In order to make music, one must cross the threshold from producing technically accurate sounds into a mysterious and sometimes elusive realm of heart, love, compassion, gentleness, and joy. In Dan Ross’ studio, one learned that a musician capable of evoking strong emotions must first be a person of great character. Dan Ross excelled in all things musical, but more importantly, he was an excellent man. He may well be remembered as a great musician, a great performer and teacher, or as an innovator in the art of reed making. But his true legacy lies in the hearts that he touched and the lives that he molded. I count myself fortunate to have been one of many. Sonar’s Riddle is a brief musical portrait of Dr. Dan Ross, attempting to capture the essence of his kind spirit and boundless humor.
