This piece is also known as Air on the G String. It is the second movement from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 and is one of Bach's most famous compositions. Originally composed for two violins, viola, and basso continuo.I originally wrote this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet in the classical SATB lineup (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone Sax). However, the second part also works well for Soprano Sax, and the third part can be played by an Alto Saxophone. Apart from a few minor changes, I stayed very true to the original composition. I haven't added any articulations and have retained the key of D major.Note: Having two Sopranos in a Sax Quartet is highly unusual. If you have the opportunity, I strongly recommend giving it a try. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. The Aria with 30 variations which form the work which is known as the « Goldberg » variations is one of the greatest works of Bach. It is his only work which uses the form of variations and through three series of ten variations each, it explores a myriad of musical genres and styles. The initial Aria, which seems to be rather trite and banal at the beginning of the work, is magnified through these transformations and the da capo at the end brings us back to the beginning, which has been changed by the musical journey itself. As a sort of musical « initiation », it has become a work which sparks the imagination and which creates an atmosphere all it’s own. The story of how the work came to be written has to come to us through Bach’s first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel in 1805, seventy-five years after the death of Bach. It would seem that a certain Count Keyserlingk, the Russian Ambassador to the Court of Dresden, had difficulty sleeping and asked Bach to compose a work which his protégé, a harpsichord virtuoso by the name of Goldberg, could play in a salon near his bedroom to help him sleep in the evening. For this commission, Bach was to receive the largest fee of his life, a hundred louis d’or in a golden goblet. It would seem that this story is perhaps more of a legend than anything else, as no goblet was found in Bach’s estate at the end of his life and no documented proof of this story has been found. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The third movement, entitled “Elegyâ€, is certainly the kind of direct, emotional and extremely lyrical writing for which Tchaikovsky is known. The harmony is robust and evocative, always the perfect underpinning for the melancholic melodies heard above. This arrangement for clarinet quartet (Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.
