Nimrod, is the ninth of the Enigma Variations composed by Edward Elgar in 1899. Here, the music is arranged for Saxophone Quartet, directly from the orchestral score. Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.The single pdf file contains the full score plus individual parts for Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones.The linked youtube performance is the Clarinet version of this Quartet.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. All parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. Hence the name Sinfonietta. You can hear the influence of composers like Shostakovich, Ibert, and especially Debussy (listen for the String Quartet in G-minor quote near the end). This recording is a performance by the BYU Sax Quartet, and the score was notated in Sibelius.This piece would be a great addition to a recital program for a high-school or college sax quartet, or for a solo and ensemble competition.

Elements and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

That's A Plenty was originally a piano rag written in 1914 by Lew Pollack but some time later, lyrics were added by Ray Gilbert. The tune soon became a very popular dixieland jazz standard.This arrangement was written for The Eclipse Saxophone Quartet in the UK and recorded on their 2001 album. It was meant very much as a tongue-in-cheek comedy vaudeville piece and proved very popular with both jazz and classical audiences.From an initial simple statement of the tune, this arrangement moves through several different styles, from bebop and show-two feel to an over-the-top waltz and becomes quite technically demanding in places. Discomposure - A Study in Syncopation for Saxophone Quartet.A funky and lively intermediate to advanced level piece with an edge of darkness and a whole lot of syncopation. The composition uses a variety of saxophone extended techniques, including key slaps and altissimo. Melodic lines constantly shift between parts, and there are significant solo moments for all performers. The frequent use of accents, staccato and shifting dynamics reflect a sense of agitation and anxiety within the opening section, moving gradually towards a steadier and composed feel. The use of altissimo registers in the Alto Saxophone should create a shrill and high pitched layer that contrasts the other performers, adding to the disturbed and unsettled atmosphere within the work. Performers should play with a consistently bright and punchy quality that reflects the funk style, paying particular attention to expressive techniques and note groupings, in order to maintain a sense of beat amidst the syncopated rhythms.
