The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. E lucevan le stelle (When the stars were brightly shining) is the romanza of Mario Cavaradossi, the tenor, a painter in love with Tosca, in the third act of Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1899 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Cavaradossi while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant’Angelo.  The aria is introduced by a somber clarinet solo. The incipit of the melody (heard in outline earlier in the act, as the sky lightens and the gaoler prepares for the execution) is repeated on the lines O dolci baci, o languide carezze (With sweetest kisses, tenderest caresses), and also restated in forte in the closing bars of the opera, as Tosca jumps from the ramparts. La donna è mobile (The woman is fickle) is the Duke of Mantua's canzone from the beginning of act 3 of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto (1851). The inherent irony is that the Duke, a callous playboy, is the one who is mobile (inconstant). The canzone is famous as a showcase for tenors. Raffaele Mirate's performance of the bravura aria at the opera's 1851 premiere was hailed as the highlight of the evening. Before its first public performance (in Venice), it was rehearsed under tight secrecy: a necessary precaution, because it proved to be catchy and soon after its first public performance every gondolier in Venice was singing it. The present arrangement written in 2011 for Saxophone Quartet has been transposed to the more saxophone-friendly key of Bb from the original B major. The Austrian composer Johann Georg Albrechtsberger was an organist, teacher and theorist, indeed one of his many influential pupils was a certain Ludwig Van Beethoven. His own musical works were and still are a tour-de-force and widely recorded. In fact his Alto Trombone Concerto is very much a part of the repertoire for that instrument. He also wrote, what might be today regarded as quite strange, no less than 7 Concerti for the Jaws Harp and String Orchestra. (Youtube) In this Saxophone version the music is scored, unusually, for 3 equal Soprano Saxes AND Tenor Sax. The 5 pieces here are representitive of his masterly fugal output, tweaked here and there to suit this rare Saxophone Quartet format!
