This ballad by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell was a hit for The Hollies in 1969 and has been recorded by many other artists including Neil Diamond, The Osmonds and Rufus Wainwright (for the film Zoolander). It is a really well-known melody which many audiences would appreciate.Here it is arranged for saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) with an optional vocal part. The tune is mainly on the tenor part (so this can be substituted for the vocal part) but each other part has some of the melody too. It also includes an alto solo which can be played as written or improvised using the chord symbols. .

Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 97 pages. James Pybus #36481. Published by James Pybus (A0.764653). In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruplesabout performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianistfriends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that hedisliked.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741) was a Belgian composer during the late baroque period. He is most well known for numerous vocal works, although this allegro is quite well known to students of the Suzuki violin method. The arrangement is scored for SATB, although there is an alto (sub for soprano) for those lacking a soprano in their quartet and a bass (sub for bari) part just to spread the bass sax love included as well. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 10 pages, Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection.
