Suite from Abdelazer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) SATB Saxophone Quartet Suite from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell, arranged for saxophone quartet SATB. Purcell wrote the incidental music for the play Abdelazer (sometimes spelled 'Abdelazar') in 1695, shortly before his death. It is a lively mix of songs and dances of the time. Typical of the day, several of the movements became well known as popular songs. The rondo was later made famous by Benjamin Britten, who used it as the theme for his set of variations, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. The rondo as well as another selection, the Hornpipe, was included in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.This transcription for saxophone quartet SATB of Suite from Abdelazar is comprised of five of the ten selections Purcell wrote for the play. The movements are as follows: I. Overture II. Minuet III. Hornpipe IV. Air V. Rondo About the Composer: Henry Purcell (born c. 1659, London, England—died November 21, 1695, London) was an English composer of Baroque music. Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell is included with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers. Later, Purcell's music also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century.The cause of Purcell's untimely death at the age of 36 is unclear. There are many theories, some preposterous (he died from chocolate poisoning), some more likely: he died of tuberculosis. Purcell was universally mourned as a very great master of music.  Following his death, the officials at Westminster honoured him by unanimously voting that he be buried with no expense spared in the north aisle of the Abbey.

Sax Quartet (SATB or AATB)Looking for some familiar, yet very different Christmas Music? Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening soprano sax theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by tenor, then baritone sax, before returning to the opening section on Alto.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. Scored for two Altos, Tenor and Baritone saxes, there are alternative parts three and four so that it can be played by four Altos. This is very useful for teachers of groups of like instruments. The Merry Widow Waltz is probably the most well-known and enduring melody from Franz Lehar’s Operetta ‘The Merry Widow’, first performed in 1905. Immediate success followed in both London and in America, and it was later adapted as a Ballet. There have been many subsequent arrangements of different elements of the Score that invariably include the ’molto sentimento’ Waltz, itself.

The suite was recorded in Havana, Cuba by the Javier Zalba ensemble for the album ABRAZO on the Ansonica Label (ar0001).
