In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. Emile Jonas was born March 5, 1827 in Paris and died on May 21, 1905 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Jonas entered the Paris Conservatory in 1841, studying piano and harmonie in the class of Félix Le Couppey, and composition with Michele Carafa. In 1849, he won the second Grand Prix de Rome with his Cantata Antonio. In 1847, Jonas became an assistant to the solfege classes at the Paris Conservatory, becoming a full professor in 1857. In 1859, be was named professor of musical composition and harmony at the Imperial military conservatory. In 1870, he retired from the Conservatory and took the post of Musical Director of the Garde Impériale. He was also cantor and choral director of the Portuguese synagogue in the rue Lamartine in Paris. Jonas was famous in his time for his comic operas, especially Le Canard à trois becs. His work Prière for saxophone quartet or sextet is one of the first ensemble pieces ever written for the saxophone. In 1854, he published a collection of Hebrew songs of the Sephardic tradition. This is the score and parts for the SATB saxophone quartet version. The version for SAATTB sextet is available as mfej001a on this site.

"Take Five" is a jazz standard composed by Paul Desmond and originally recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for its 1959 album Time Out. Made at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City on July 1, 1959, fully two years later it became an unlikely hit and the biggest-selling jazz single ever. Revived since in numerous movie and television soundtracks, the piece still receives significant radio airplay.
This arrangement for sax quartet (Bb Soprano, Eb Alto, Bb Tenor, Eb Baritone) includes two different keys: the original Eb Minor and a "more comfortable" F Minor.
The piece is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. Released on 26 May 1967, it spent 27 weeks at number one on the Record Retailer chart in the United Kingdom and 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart in the United States. It was lauded by critics for its innovations in songwriting, production and graphic design, for bridging a cultural divide between popular music and high art, and for reflecting the interests of contemporary youth and the counterculture. Its release was a defining moment in 1960s pop culture, heralding the Summer of Love, while the album's reception achieved full cultural legitimisation for pop music and recognition for the medium as a genuine art form. This is my arrangement of the opening number.for standard sax quartet: SATB I have transposed from the original key of G to F to aid the saxplayers.. I have created a new ending for those sax quartets who wish to play the piece on it's own, but also included the oruginal fade away ending which seques into the next track...with a little help.YouTube Vid is my brass quartet arrangement.
