The idea for this piece were inspired by the submissions guidelines of the performing ensemble a very small consortium. That the piece needed to consist of 100 or fewer notes and be 60 seconds or less in duration caused the composer to think about how time passes in a very measured way. The resultant composition is supposed to be an audio snippet of music embodying the inexorable march of time, with indications such as As if tuning-in to music that is already going on, (Not cadencing is what makes the march inexorable), and Quickly turning down the volume knob.

Powerhouse (1937) is an instrumental musical composition by Raymond Scott, perhaps best known today as the iconic assembly line music in animated cartoons released by Warner Bros. The first use of Powerhouse in a cartoon occurred in the 1943 Warner Bros., Looney Tunes short Porky Pig’s Feat, directed by Frank Tashlin. Also in 1943, it was used in the Private Snafu shorts Gripes, Spies, and Rumors. It was subsequently featured in over 40 other Warner Bros. cartoons. The most well-known assembly-line usage of Powerhouse B occurs in Bob Clampett’s Baby Bottleneck (1946), in which newborn babies (of various species) are processed on a conveyor belt in time to the melody. Powerhouse has been used In The Simpsons four times. Simpsons creator Matt Groening once ranked Powerhouse as #14 on a list of his 100 Favorite Things. E lucevan le stelle (When the stars were brightly shining) is the romanza of Mario Cavaradossi, the tenor, a painter in love with Tosca, in the third act of Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1899 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Cavaradossi while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant’Angelo.  The aria is introduced by a somber clarinet solo. The incipit of the melody (heard in outline earlier in the act, as the sky lightens and the gaoler prepares for the execution) is repeated on the lines O dolci baci, o languide carezze (With sweetest kisses, tenderest caresses), and also restated in forte in the closing bars of the opera, as Tosca jumps from the ramparts. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future.
