Slightly less well known than his earlier Gymnopedies, the Gnossiennes, dating from the 1890s, exhibit the same meditative, repetitive style but with influences from Javanese and exotic music. He wrote seven in total.This arrangement takes the structure from the original piano piece, sharing the melodic themes around the quartet whilst taking us on a journey through a sequence of related minor keys.

Runaway Steam Train Boogie is a fun programmatic saxophone quartet (SATB) illustrating a steam train on its runaway journey. Air blown through the instrument whilst moving the fingers depicts the release of steam at the start of the train's journey soon followed by the whistle portrayed through lip scoops. The melody line is shared between soprano and alto saxophones with the tenor and baritone saxophones characterising the train engine with the opening section outlining a 12-bar blues sequence. The tenor saxophone takes up the mantle carrying the tune through a later minor section. The train gathers pace throughout the piece arriving at 220BPM in a final section flourish. Tempo markings can be adjusted to suit the ensemble. Bach's Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829, is an essential work for several reasons: The Partitas, including BWV 829, were among the last keyboard suites composed by Bach and are considered his most technically demanding. They were published individually starting in 1726, then collected together as Clavier-Übung I in 1731, the first of Bach's works published under his direction. Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829, is particularly notable for its free-ranging structure, unlike the strictly organized English and French Suites. Additionally, the tonalities of the six Partitas form a deliberate sequence of intervals going up and down, with Partita No. 5 in G major completing this tonal scheme. This intervallic sequencing suggests Bach carefully structured the collection as a cohesive whole. Finally, Partita No. 5 is considered an exercise in spiritual delight for its technical demands and expressive qualities. It is one of the repertoire's most famous and challenging keyboard suites.

Saxophone Quartet (SATB or AATB)In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This sax quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with soprano saxophone playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the tenor sax presents the tune in a lower register while the baritone plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The sopranoe and alto weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

Composed between 1867 and 1876, the Bacchanale is an exciting instrumental ballet sequence from the third act of the opera. The Bacchanale falls in the midst of pagan ceremonies at the Philistines' Temple of Dagon, the same building Samson topples at the close of the opera. The Prelude 1 Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levinson, few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end Good to play as well!! The Fugue 22 The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic. Also available here in Clarinet Quartet and Wind Quartet flavours!!

However, this specific feature is less common in Western musical practices. The work’s metric structure is based on sequences of two, three and four sixteenth notes. These units of unequal length, such as the 2/16, 3/16, and 4/16 meters, are irregularly alternated in order to build musical phrases. The modal pitch structure has its origin in some Geamparale tunes, wedding dances from the Danube Plain and Dobrogea region.
