Jean-Charles Demichel, a Jazz pianist and composer from Lyon in France, a well known at the Jazz Hot Club cave in Lyon, has forged a solid reputation in the last 40 years alongside the world best Jazzmans such as Canadian Oscar Peterson or American jazz greats such as trumpet players Bill Coleman and Sonny Gray, tenors Johnny Griffin or Nathan Davis, drummers Kenny Clark and Art Taylor. He has played regularly as a trio or quartet at the Hot Club de Lyon since 1958, a club he chaired for many years and helped to receive well the best world Jazzmans coming in Lyon and Paris. Jean-Charles also plays in various quartets with various styles and inspirations of the old jazz from Duke Ellington to Bill Evans or to the best pianists such as the late Oscar Peterson's playing with Ray Brown. JC Demichel repertoire is large, with a strong French bebop dominance mixed with bossa nova rhythms as it is herein into the Ballade of Adcha created by JC Demichel. More recently, the song has found renewed popularity due to its use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Avengers†movies. This arrangement takes its cue from the recording by Harry James and his orchestra, and reworks the performance as presented here for Vocal soloist, 3 horns, and Rhythm section. This chart observes the original key and form of the classic recording by Harry James with vocal soloist Helen Forrest. The horn parts closely follow in the footsteps of the original recording, making this a good vehicle to showcase a talented trumpeter. The remaining horns play the supporting role of the most important elements of the large orchestra arrangement which requires strong players on all parts. The Rhythm section/Lead sheet incorporates the chord changes and most important rhythmic elements to allow a flexible instrumentation of rhythm section to adequately feature the trumpeter and vocalist. Cissy Strut is a 1969 funk instrumental by The Meters. Released as a single from their eponymous debut album, it reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, which honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. The A.V. Club called the song a classic deeply rooted in New Orleans music tradition.Cissy Strut was featured in the films Jackie Brown, Red, King Richard and Another Round as well as in the BBC television series The Pursuit of Love.In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked Cissy Strut at number 158 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, one of the handful of instrumentals to make the list.Many transcribers of this tune obscure the 1/4 notes by improperly beaming the 1/16 notes. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. Here’s an easy-going swing tune to feature your trombonists! This original from Aaron Hettinga features some nice soli section playing along with space for solos. There are plenty of texture changes around: tight high harmony, call & response, solo support, group articulations, great chances to showcase quartet section playing and provide opportunities to teach developing players about ABAC form and ensemble.While the top two bone parts can be a bit taxing in range (the lead part especially as it hangs around high C for the much of the last page), the lower parts are mostly straightforward for what’s found in Big Band swing charts.
