Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling. This is a romantic samba. I wrote this tune to express my wife's qualities of warmth and surprise...and how she is a wonderful dancer. I think of the tune as being fairly straight-forward; however, it has some surprises. The AB form is unusual in how the A part is 15 measures and the B part is 22. While the music is mostly in 4/4, there are two places where a measure or two of 3/4 is used to shake things up. Harmonically, there is a mix of standard II-V chord changes, parallel harmony, and symmetrical harmony. The melody has a floating quality. The sustained notes give the rhythm section space for fills. This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.

The piano part is the lead but the tenor has a lot of lead-like instances as well. The tempo is increased slightly from the original and the piece is meant to be swung throughout.

This is my first original composition, written in late summer 2023. Would you believe me if I told you I wrote this in a single day? Probably not! XD. I was experimenting with chords, and everything just sort of clicked. Then came the melody. I called it Contrast, because, in my honest opinion, I used both bright sounding and dark sounding chords in jazz. This package includes the score, the parts: both transposed (Eb and Bb) and concert pitch, and the audio demo of how it should sound. So if you're interested in buying and playing this piece of music, by all means, go for it!If you want to listen to the live performance, you can go by the YouTube link that I provided below. The audio isn't the best, but you'll be able to hear enough.

Bach’s St. John Passion. São João means St. John in Portuguese, in recognition of the Brazilian roots of bossa nova. For me, Bach’s rich and appealing chord progressions and choral melodies, and the steady flow of the music in this chorus, as well as the popularity of Bach among jazz musicians, justify this adaptation.
