ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. Published by oh2Musikk (A0.1023975). How can your trombone quartet gain more audience? By playing with other people. You want your concerts to be well visited and to help you with that, I make arrangements (and compositions) for trombonequartet with guitar, piano, bass and drums. They also contain an optional bass-trombone/ tuba part and sometimes a solo part. This one contains a trombone solo part. This arrangement of A Whole New World, is scored for Solo Trombone in front of the ensemble mentioned above. There are two solo parts in the set. One high and and one low. You can combine those two if that makes you more comfortable. Durata: 3,5 minutes (approx.) The song itself is about Alladin taking Jasmine on a ride on the magic carpet. The lyrics are all about discovering what you didn’t know about and be grateful for all the adventures life gives. This makes it a perfect piece to play in a variety of places, like weddings, celebrations of any kind, graduations, not to mention many types of concerts. With a few adjustments you can also use parts of this arrangement and make it work. It’s most powerful when you use the whole band, but it still makes a lot of sense if you have to skip some of the parts. There are so many times I have had to skip a piece in a concert, using a not as good substitute, because we didn’t have the people to play it. ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities.
