This is a lead sheet for an original bossa nova/jazz piece. The title, Não Sei Porque (I Don't Know Why...), is a nod to the Brazilian origins of the bossa nova style. The translation of said title is in parentheses. The piece is intended to be performed at approximately 135 bpm. It's a lively piece that can be performed in and arranged for any context in which you might perform any jazz standard. A variety of ensembles from high school to professional levels could perform it to a very warm reception. The audio file is my attempt at a standard big band arrangement. It was done in Finale 25 with instruments from Garritan's JABB 3 software. The interlude section is intended to be played after every solo in a manner similar to the way A Night in Tunisia is sometimes played. This isn't required of course. It's jazz! Improvise! By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a swing tune lead sheet with lyrics, chord symbols and guitar fret boards, for a jazz ensemble with two voices, or for one voice and a singing instrument, or for two singing instruments. It serves as a good foundation for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a medium swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my tunes from Finale PrintMusic. You hear two melodies with the accompaniment -- a treble electric guitar, and a simulated baritone voice (without the words). A rock version of St. Matthew Blue is also for sale on this web site. St. Matthew Blue portrays an unhappy person coping with the COVID 19 pandemic, which started early in the year 2020. It’s not a blues tune, however, so the word blue is in the title without the s. St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work. This gives a depth to this piece that sets it apart from other swing tunes. Here are the lyrics to St. Matthew Blue:An evil little bug has got me down.I want to drink a mug of beer in town. But now I get supplies brought to my door From many tries to find an online store. Self-pity brings to mind St. Matthew’s tale, How Jesus saved our kind from fiery hell. That my soul is safe may well be true, But I still chafe at fighting this damn flu.

So it supports a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a jazz bossa nova accompaniment, combined with my tune from Finale PrintMusic - a quartet ensemble. In this particular sample, you'll hear a flute carry the tune.Levantado translates to lifted up, and connotes being cheered up or advanced in some way. This tune would serve well at a graduation party. Many bossa novas are in minor keys and convey sadness or melancholy. Levantado is not your typical bossa -- you’ll hear major chords and ascending melody motifs, good for a happy occasion. Libertango, by Astor Piazzolla, was my inspiration for this composition, and he is recognized in the subtitle. The basic structure of Levantado is similar to Piazzolla's piece, but the harmonic progressions and melody in Levantado differ from those in Libertango. The chord base notes in my piece often ascend in the progressions, where they descend in Piazzolla's piece. The melody motifs between the two pieces also differ -- gone are Libertango's repeated 7-note figures, and there are reversals or inversions in my piece relative to Piazzolla's other melodic material.

This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.
