I mean, The Ting Tings are just two people so there really isn't much to the song. I call it intermediate in difficulty only because horn players are in difficult keys. I disagree with the lyrics listed on the internet in some spots. It is a disease that affects all peoples without bounds in all walks of my life. It is a piece of hope that represents a turning of the tides the affliction as well as the dense fog that it produces within. I played it live with drummer for prelude for piano solo or ensemble. This is an original tune with a great funky vibe. The piece has a distinct and unique introduction, and development. You got to give it up for the key of this piece of Ab minor, you have been warned. LOL. 2 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improve over. I used it in church for a prelude and it was well received with a jamming drummer. Fun Stuff.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a swing tune lead sheet with lyrics, chord symbols and guitar fret boards, for a jazz ensemble with two voices, or for one voice and a singing instrument, or for two singing instruments. It serves as a good foundation for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a medium swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my tunes from Finale PrintMusic. You hear two melodies with the accompaniment -- a treble electric guitar, and a simulated baritone voice (without the words). A rock version of St. Matthew Blue is also for sale on this web site. St. Matthew Blue portrays an unhappy person coping with the COVID 19 pandemic, which started early in the year 2020. It’s not a blues tune, however, so the word blue is in the title without the s. St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work. This gives a depth to this piece that sets it apart from other swing tunes. Here are the lyrics to St. Matthew Blue:An evil little bug has got me down.I want to drink a mug of beer in town. But now I get supplies brought to my door From many tries to find an online store. Self-pity brings to mind St. Matthew’s tale, How Jesus saved our kind from fiery hell. This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars. In this arrangement, you will hear acoustic guitar and violin, often heard in tango ensembles in the early 20th century. This bossa nova is inspired by Eduardo Arolasâ??s never-published tango, Volcán (Volcano). At least itâ??s never been published according to the todotango.com web site. Eduardo Arolas is a famous tango composer who is well documented on that web site. Also on that web site, you can listen to Osvaldo Requenaâ??s piano performance of Volcán from Arolasâ??s original piano sheets (written circa 1917). Years ago, I developed and wrote a tango quintet arrangement of Volcán by listening carefully to Requenaâ??s recorded piano performance on the web site. My quintet arrangement, in turn, was my source for writing this bossa nova arrangement. So, now Volcán has finally been published, but as a bossa nova! Wherever Señor Arolas may be, I hope he understands. In this bossa nova arrangement, I believe I've preserved the spirit of Arolas's original tango.Without knowing exactly what was in Eduardo Arolas's mind when he wrote the original tango, this is my personal idea of the message behind the music:Introduction: Let me tell you a story about a volcano that happened long ago.Part A (bars 5-20): It's a sad tale about human helplessness and suffering in the face of natural catastrophe.Part B (bars 21-36): The people living in a town below a volcanic peak were going about business, leisure, and play, experiencing the ordinary cares and pleasures of life.Part C (bars 41-52): One day, without warning, the volcano erupted, with smoke, falling hot rocks and ash, and hot lava flows. Some folks got away, but others were killed, buried or injured, and all that was left of the town was devastation, suffering, and, eventually, calm.Part A' (bars 53-end): A sad tale, but may we learn from it, and may the souls of the poor victims rest in peace.If you listen to and read the lyrics of Arolas's great tango, La Cachila, or listen to another superb tango of his, El Marne, you will witness further his talent and skill in composing dramatic music. This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.

This is a lead sheet for an original bossa nova/jazz piece. The title, Não Sei Porque (I Don't Know Why...), is a nod to the Brazilian origins of the bossa nova style. The translation of said title is in parentheses. The piece is intended to be performed at approximately 135 bpm. It's a lively piece that can be performed in and arranged for any context in which you might perform any jazz standard. A variety of ensembles from high school to professional levels could perform it to a very warm reception. The audio file is my attempt at a standard big band arrangement. It was done in Finale 25 with instruments from Garritan's JABB 3 software. The interlude section is intended to be played after every solo in a manner similar to the way A Night in Tunisia is sometimes played. This isn't required of course. It's jazz! Improvise! The May 17, 1963, issue of Life Magazine featured a photo essay of appalling images taken by the American photographer Charles Moore. The opening paragraph bluntly stated that The pictures on these 11 pages are frightening. They are frightening because of the brutal methods being used by white policemen in Birmingham, Alabama, against Negro demonstrators . . . And they are especially frightening because the gulf between black and white is here visibly deepened. Known as the Birmingham campaign, Moore’s photographs of this senseless brutality sent shockwaves throughout the country and the world of the deeply embedded social and institutional racism and segregation of the South. On May 2, 1963, under direct orders from Birmingham’s then Commissioner of Public Safety, Eugene Bull Connor, all African Americans participating in a nonviolent demonstration organized by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were to be subdued with high-pressure water blasts from fire hoses and violently attacked and taunted by police dogs. After seeing Moore’s photos in Life, Andy Warhol created a series of Race Riot paintings using a terrifying image of Moore’s of a man being attacked by a German shepherd in his trademark acrylic and silkscreen process. Interestingly, the title Race Riot is a contradiction because it was in fact a peaceful protest interrupted by the violence of the police. There is a menacing quality to the music that I hope conveys both Moore’s original photo and Warhol’s appropriation.

Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling. Often, it is impossible for a situation to go the way we originally planned, and therefore we must learn to accept whatever comes to us.Anyway, the PDF contains parts for C, B-flat, and E-flat instruments, all of which contain chord changes for soloing. The PDF also contains a 4-chorus solo piano version, the recording of which can be found on Chris Bandy's YouTube channel.
