ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 2 expresses a mysterious mood and has a touch of blues. New Tango No. 2 is an unusual tango in several ways. Given that many of my tangos have shifting time, this one is entirely in 4/4. The A part is 12 bars. A distinctive feature of this section is the use of blues scales over triads. The B part is 8 bars. As a contrast, this section has a harmonic shift to minor 9th chords. The tune's 20-bar AB form is used for solos. To underscore a mysterious mood, the coda has a false ending (2nd bar of the coda) before starting up again (repeating bars 9-11 of the A section) and leading into the real ending. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. Cissy Strut is a 1969 funk instrumental by The Meters. Released as a single from their eponymous debut album, it reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, which honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. The A.V. Club called the song a classic deeply rooted in New Orleans music tradition.Cissy Strut was featured in the films Jackie Brown, Red, King Richard and Another Round as well as in the BBC television series The Pursuit of Love.In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked Cissy Strut at number 158 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, one of the handful of instrumentals to make the list.Many transcribers of this tune obscure the 1/4 notes by improperly beaming the 1/16 notes. This arrangement fixes that issue. Shifting time funk (for 5 wind instruments and rhythm section)! The title expresses my disdain for contending with monster SUVs when driving on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. As I envision this music, it is funky and adventurous. The piece is a minimalist composition -- the melody is only 16 bars. However, it has expanded improvisation concepts for the soloist and the ensemble. The ensemble's collective improvisation is to sound like music coming out of car windows in traffic. The sounds change quickly. Different kinds of music come, go, and overlap. Radios (or electronics) may be used for additional layers of sound. The soloists use four chord progression patterns. Each soloist determines which patterns to play and their sequence. The patterns can be played in any order. Ideally, the patterns are determined within a performance instead of before. The soloist communicates the patterns, and when to shift to a new pattern, to the ensemble by hand signals. Music styles can also shift within a solo. Performers can take the music in any creative direction they want to go with it. More recently, the song has found renewed popularity due to its use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Avengers†movies. This arrangement takes its cue from the recording by Harry James and his orchestra, and reworks the performance as presented here for Vocal soloist, 3 horns, and Rhythm section. This chart observes the original key and form of the classic recording by Harry James with vocal soloist Helen Forrest. The horn parts closely follow in the footsteps of the original recording, making this a good vehicle to showcase a talented trumpeter. The remaining horns play the supporting role of the most important elements of the large orchestra arrangement which requires strong players on all parts. The Rhythm section/Lead sheet incorporates the chord changes and most important rhythmic elements to allow a flexible instrumentation of rhythm section to adequately feature the trumpeter and vocalist. This arrangement is a great way to showcase talented instrumentalists and vocals on this classic piece of music!
