ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. This is a great tune and the piece has a distinct and unique introduction, and 2 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prelude.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a swing tune lead sheet with lyrics, chord symbols and guitar fret boards, for a jazz ensemble with two voices, or for one voice and a singing instrument, or for two singing instruments. It serves as a good foundation for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a medium swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my tunes from Finale PrintMusic. You hear two melodies with the accompaniment -- a treble electric guitar, and a simulated baritone voice (without the words). A rock version of St. Matthew Blue is also for sale on this web site. St. Matthew Blue portrays an unhappy person coping with the COVID 19 pandemic, which started early in the year 2020. It’s not a blues tune, however, so the word blue is in the title without the s. St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work. This gives a depth to this piece that sets it apart from other swing tunes. Here are the lyrics to St. Matthew Blue:An evil little bug has got me down.I want to drink a mug of beer in town. But now I get supplies brought to my door From many tries to find an online store. Self-pity brings to mind St. Matthew’s tale, How Jesus saved our kind from fiery hell. That my soul is safe may well be true, But I still chafe at fighting this damn flu.

This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars. Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 2 expresses a mysterious mood and has a touch of blues. New Tango No. 2 is an unusual tango in several ways. Given that many of my tangos have shifting time, this one is entirely in 4/4. The A part is 12 bars. A distinctive feature of this section is the use of blues scales over triads. The B part is 8 bars. As a contrast, this section has a harmonic shift to minor 9th chords. The tune's 20-bar AB form is used for solos. To underscore a mysterious mood, the coda has a false ending (2nd bar of the coda) before starting up again (repeating bars 9-11 of the A section) and leading into the real ending. One of the unusual things about this piece is the first 2 bars of the melody (with a stop time break) are not used for solos. This enables the stop time to not become overused. The minor blues framework of this tango is more apparent in the the solo section. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. Pi, Why? is an unconventional blues that uses Pi (3.1415926....) as a sequence of melodic intervals. Do not let that scare you away -- the music swings. The structure of this 18-bar tune is based on 3-bar phrases and there is shifting time in places. The first 32 digits of Pi are used in this tune: 3.1415926535897932384626433832795. Here is how I converted the Pi numbers to melodic intervals: Simply, each number becomes an interval in relation to the root of the chord being used at the time. That is, the relationships change when the chords change. The intervals are natural or altered (b9, #9, #11, etc.) chord tones or higher tensions. For 3 on V7 chords, I use either natural 3 or minor 3 (enharmonically #9). The tune starts with the sequence of 3 (#9), 1, 4 (#11), 1, 5, 9 (b9) played twice with C7 (#9) and then transposed down a half-step for B7 (#9). The next sequence -- 2 (b9), 6, 5, 3 (natural), 5 -- is played with the Bb7 (#9) chord and so on through the rest of the 32-note sequence. While 3 is the first number of Pi, that is not why the tune is structured with 3-bar phrases. Simply, the 3-bar phrases felt natural and swinging to me. This tune has a strong blues flavor; however, it is not a conventional 12-bar blues in its structure or chord progression. The A part is 12 bars. Then, the B part is 6 bars with alternating 4/4 and 3/4 (one can think of it as 7/4). The B part also has a harmonic shift from V7 (#9) chords to V9 sus4 and major 7th chords. This is a romantic samba. I wrote this tune to express my wife's qualities of warmth and surprise...and how she is a wonderful dancer. I think of the tune as being fairly straight-forward; however, it has some surprises. The AB form is unusual in how the A part is 15 measures and the B part is 22. While the music is mostly in 4/4, there are two places where a measure or two of 3/4 is used to shake things up. Harmonically, there is a mix of standard II-V chord changes, parallel harmony, and symmetrical harmony. The melody has a floating quality. The sustained notes give the rhythm section space for fills. October Joy is a slip jig (Celtic dance music in 9/8) with touches of contemporary jazz. I consider it to be one of my best fusions of roots music and jazz. Besides being a blend of Celtic and jazz styles, this piece has a number of unusual features. Structurally, I think of it as AAAB. The first A is 5 bars, the second A is 3 bars (transposed up a half-step to Ab), and the third A is 3 bars (transposed back to G). The B part, 9 bars in length, has a sudden change to E for the first 3 bars. Then, the chord progression becomes harmonically vague -- including a shift from major 7th chords to V9 sus4 chords. Shifting time is used throughout the piece with single or multiple bars of 6/8 interjected into the 9/8. While it has some quirky touches, this is music with a driving and joyful spirit. Fanfare was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. As I envision this music, it has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the opening chords. A slow, soulful blues for those times when we need to play a slow, soulful blues. The title comes from a day when I was reflecting upon lost ancient civilizations and wondering about their music. What did the music sound like? Did the musicians back then have steady gigs? This is a fairly conventional 12-bar blues, however it has some interesting quirks. The 4th bar has a sustained C with V7 (#9) chords moving chromatically upwards against it. In terms of conventional harmony, the C is a wrong note on several of the chords (like the Db7). The chord changes have reharmonization in several places. The ending, with a shift to major 7th chords, is unusual for a blues. Goodbye To Summer is a gentle and reflective bossa nova. While this tune is AABA, it has an unusual structure. The first A section is 11 bars (repeated), the B section is 4 bars, and the last A section is 7 bars. The entire form is 33 bars. The bridge goes into a slower tempo and is to be played freely. The last A section was truncated, from 11 bars to 7, to have a lead-in for the soloist that suddenly comes out of nowhere. Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling.
