This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (18 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this.

Published by Slide Ride (A0.784344). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

FLAVIAN, captures the somber mood of the forty-day journey through the Lenten season. Following the opening march-like fanfare, the familiar melody enters in the oboe above the drone of the horn and bassoon. Then the bassoon takes the melody, transposing it to F Dorian, then, briefly to G Mixolydian. At the key change, the melody returns to its original form, now taken up by the clarinet. The opening fanfare returns in an abbreviated form in the coda as the piece ends quietly on a D6/9 chord. It is a story about a princess who is tested to become wife to a lonely prince. The tale was first published in 1835 in Copenhagen. In this work, the tale is presented by a narrator, with the wind quintet bringing the story to life in a musical way. This selection comes with a full score with cues for the narrator, parts for the ensemble, and a narrator's script that features ensemble cues to help align the story and music together properly.There are many features in this work that are sure to interest audiences of all ages. Different motifs are used to differentiate between characters and settings. The ensemble may find an opportunity to invite the audience to actively listen to these themes. This selection also features the use of props - a cutting board (preferably with a cutout area to grip the board easily) and an inflated latex balloon are required to make various sound effects. The Fool on the Hill is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 EP and album Magical Mystery Tour. It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The lyrics describe the titular fool, a solitary figure who is not understood by others, but is actually wise.McCartney said the idea for the song was inspired by the Dutch design collective the Fool, who derived their name from the tarot card of the same name, and possibly by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The song's segment in the Magical Mystery Tour television film was shot separately from the rest of the film and without the other Beatles' knowledge. Accompanied by a professional cameraman, McCartney filmed the scene near Nice in France.In 1968, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded a cover version of the song that reached the top ten in the US. Every piano player would most probably be familiar with this piece, but not necessarily wind players. However, with this arrangement for Wind Quintet, the expressive voices of this piano piece are further explored by the colours of the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.The opening solo is deliberately given to the flute, paying homage to another iconic piece of Debussy's, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which opens with a lower register flute solo starting with the same note Db.Conscious decisions were also made to give the phrases in bars 12-13 and 15-16 with larger melodic spreads to the Clarinet, whose expressive qualities across these ranges suit these phrases particularly well.The revisiting of the theme in bar 28, this time in a higher register, was deliberately given to the Oboe and not the flute (not every high register melodies needs to be assigned to the flute). Oboe's higher registers, when played delicately to the point of almost struggling to hang on to the higher notes, suit the sweetness (tre doux) of the solo passage particularly well.Not to forget the characteristic Debussy harmonies that is fully supported and suited to be powered by the French Horn and Bassoon. These lower voices provide the harmonic engine that powers this unmistakable Debussy sound.Truly, this arrangement is a challenge and masterclass in tone colour for the Wind Quintet that demands a simultaneous homogeneity, as well as balance that brings out the Debussy sound, yet allowing each of the characteristics of the Wind instruments to shine through.

Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players.
