Adagio for Winds focuses on constant tension and release, passing between instruments through the use of rising and descending melodic motifs.The English Horn can be substituted for the French Horn and vice versa.

When Rossini discovered these quartets that he wrote when he was 12 he described them as : Six dreadful sonatas composed by me at the country estate of my friend Agostino Triossi, when I was at a most infantile age, not even having taken a lesson in accompaniment, the whole composed and copied out in three days. These delightful sonate a quattro are the earliest of his works to have survived and they have been in the repertoire ever since he wrote them. They were first published in an arrangement for string quartet. A version for wind quartet followed in 1828/9. This arrangement is for Wind Quintet with the addition of an oboe part. This provides a wider range of textures and also provides an opportunity to share the thematic material between all the players.

This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement gets more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Littel Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.  4.This arrangement is for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Bb Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo piece:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement is entirely in 4/4 using Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.

Being in B Major, this is the quintessential Prelude and Fugue that couldn't be played in tune in standard baroque keyboard temperament, thus making the case for Bach's preferred temperament system (the details of which remain a mystery!). Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

I have spread the voices around, so there is NOT a constant tutti of all 5 players The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is no 4 of the Sequenz Recordare At 130 measures, the Recordare (Remember) is the work's longest movement, as well as the first in triple meter the movement is a setting of no fewer than seven stanzas of the Dies irae. The form of this piece is somewhat similar to sonata form, with an exposition around two themes (mm. 1–37), a development of two themes (mm. 38–92) and a recapitulation (mm. 93–98). It suits the wind quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). RayThompsonMusic #3569493. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553717). Mozart wrote three early String Quartets in Salzburg in 1772 naming them Divertimenti. They are catalogued as K.136, K.137 and K.138. In form these Divertimenti are in three movements, which differs from his later divertimenti which have 4 or more movements. They are sometimes known as Salzburg Symphonies 1 to 3. K. 136, in D major, the best known of the three, opens with an Allegro, followed by an attractive G major slow movement and a rapid finale with the requisite touch of contrapuntal interest. K. 137, in B flat major, starts with an Andante, followed by two faster movements. The third of the set, K. 138, in F major, follows an opening tripartite Allegro with a G major Andante and a final Presto. This is mvt.1 Allegro of K. 136 in D major: arranged wind quintet.Complete  arrangement of this Divertimento K136 available here.I have created new natural horn parts.The melody is shared out between mainly flute and oboe...I have not done a straight swop from violin 1 to flute etc....Written for Clarinet in A, Horn In D.(Clarinet in Bb and Horn in F also provided).
