Originally for chamber orchestra, Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to SUNY Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star. Duration: 5:00

Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds. This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. Published by Thinkling Music (A0.1145980).      AEROS is a one-movement piece about flying.      The composition begins with Latin dance rhythms and a clearly defined melodic motif. The threads gradually build to a tumble of ecstatic exuberance, engaging but short-lived. The remainder of the piece is a return to the mundane, ultimately settling on a plateau of stability which the listener senses to be merely a steppingstone, a pause before resuming the journey into an uncertain future …      Structurally, the work is a single movement built around an Afro-Cuban montuno pattern, with ostinati divided among the instruments. Stylistically it could be considered as “moody minimalist with a melodyâ€. Or if that is too long and unwieldy, then perhaps just “MMMMUSIC!â€Â      First performance in Laguna Beach, California on September 21st, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet, as part of the Sunset Serenades series. The outdoor venue, a small amphitheater in beautiful Heisler Park, high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was the perfect aerie from which to bring this piece into the world.

Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) On the Trail is the third movement from Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, written between 1929 and 1931; published in 1932. It has since become one of the most popular American musical works of the twentieth century, with On the Trail being the most well-known movement. It portrays a cowboy and his burro (donkey) sauntering through the Grand Canyon, coming across an oasis and a lonely cabin where they hear a music box playing, before continuing their journey. All this is portrayed in the music, including the braying sound of the donkey, its clip-clopping along and the cowboy singing a relaxed Western style song.This lovely and fun arrangement for wind quintet remains faithful to the original; retaining its structure, key and, where possible, its instrumentation. The only section omitted is the violin cadenza. The original orchestral work includes clarinets in Bb. This arrangement is also written for Bb clarinet but an alternative clarinet in A part is included, which is more suited to the key of the work.This is an ideal recital piece for either formal or informal concert settings. Ottorino Respighi's Adoration of the Magi from Three Botticelli Pictures set for WOODWIND QUINTET by John Gibson. Respighi composed the Trittico in 1927 in a three movement setting of musical impressions of paintings by Botticelli. The middle movement, Adoration of the Magi makes use of the ancient Christmas season hymn, O Come, O Come, Emanuel. This setting for woodwind quintet is for flute, oboe, clarinet in A (with an alternate Bb part provided), F Horn, and bassoon. In my opinion this is suitable for advanced players, due to the depth of the music as well as challenging key signatures and instrument ranges, especially for the bassoon. I kept the key relationships the same as in the original orchestration. In the original the clarinet switches from A clarinet to Bb clarinet, and I eliminated that but have provided an optional Bb part if desired. Â Â The short audio sample begins on page 3 of the score.
