Included are a score and a complete set of parts (21 pages). It begins with a Burgundian Air, played by a solo instrument. The melody is then played by two instruments in harmony before the rest of the ensemble joins in. This is followed by the March of the Three Kings, a Provencal melody (La Marche Des Rois Mages) which dates from the 13th century and recalls the Three Kings of the Christmas story. The peasants probably sang and danced to this tune, even perhaps honoring their own folk heroes, the French dukes, dressed in their shining armor and carrying brilliant banners, as they marched off to the Crusades. Georges Bizet utilized this tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles). There is a fugal section in which each instrument enters, playing an embellished version of the tune before concluding the arrangement. Also available are other settings of these two Traditional French melodies for a variety of instrumental ensembles as well as numerous other arrangements in a variety of styles. Every piano player would most probably be familiar with this piece, but not necessarily wind players. However, with this arrangement for Wind Quintet, the expressive voices of this piano piece are further explored by the colours of the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.The opening solo is deliberately given to the flute, paying homage to another iconic piece of Debussy's, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which opens with a lower register flute solo starting with the same note Db.Conscious decisions were also made to give the phrases in bars 12-13 and 15-16 with larger melodic spreads to the Clarinet, whose expressive qualities across these ranges suit these phrases particularly well.The revisiting of the theme in bar 28, this time in a higher register, was deliberately given to the Oboe and not the flute (not every high register melodies needs to be assigned to the flute). Oboe's higher registers, when played delicately to the point of almost struggling to hang on to the higher notes, suit the sweetness (tre doux) of the solo passage particularly well.Not to forget the characteristic Debussy harmonies that is fully supported and suited to be powered by the French Horn and Bassoon. These lower voices provide the harmonic engine that powers this unmistakable Debussy sound.Truly, this arrangement is a challenge and masterclass in tone colour for the Wind Quintet that demands a simultaneous homogeneity, as well as balance that brings out the Debussy sound, yet allowing each of the characteristics of the Wind instruments to shine through.

Although Burns wrote the words of the song, he set them to a variation of an existing tune called The Hemp Dresser which dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is a lively jig which is arranged here for Wind Quintet. This wind quintet arrangement begins with oboe and bassoon playing the tune and bass line, almost exactly as they appeared in The Scots Musical Museum, published by James Johnson & Co in six volumes between 1787 and 1803. The other instruments all get the opportunity to play the melodic line in the ensuing 5 verses, as the arrangement gets more complex and fun. The arranger makes great use of the tritone; or devil’s interval as it is often known because of its unsettling presence. However, in this arrangement it merely adds to the fun and excitement.Great fun for all! Â

This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. The subtitle of the piece is (Matthew 24:29-30) which reads:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.This piece was originally performed by the Wind Quintet at Brigham Young University-Idaho during the Fall 2023 semester, and has since been polished.Estimated duration of piece: 5 min, 55 secondsEmail me for the sheet music for the individual parts, or let me know if you're going to perform this piece!ryansterry2000@gmail.com.

Over the main themes there are often short musical interjections at faster pace possibly denoting a burst of activity somewhere in the garden.This arrangement for Wind Quintet requires a precisness of articulation and an awareness of musical balance between the parts. Although fairly quick there should be an underlying clamness to the piece. A great 'foot tapper' for your programme!
