This woodwind quintet arrangement turns the traditional French carol Patapan into a Patapan Fantasy, which also includes quotes from the carols God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Good King Wenceslas, representing carols from England, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. It is perfect for all holiday events, gatherings, recitals, or caroling gigs. The arrangement was written for most ensembles, from advanced high school quintets to college ensembles to professional quintets. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. The lyrics are similar to The Little Drummer Boy: When you hear the fife and drum, dance and make the village hum. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Originally scored for piano, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. If you like this arrangement, you might also like my woodwind quintet arrangement of the 16thC Spanish carol Riu Riu Chiu. Although not as well known as some American carols, it's a lively and dynamic arrangement that brings a taste of Europe to your holiday celebrations. Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796886). This Fantasia in D Minor, K. 397, really shows off Mozart's dramatic side. My arrangement of this Fantasy, one of Mozart's most popular piano pieces, gives each instrument the opportunity to play a different character. Fantasia in D Minor opens with somber arpeggios in the bassoon, and then goes to a pleading melody that goes back and forth between the flute and the oboe. The tension builds up until the clarinet breaks out into a wild cadenza. The pleading melodies and wild cadenzas go back and forth a few more times building tension until the final segment, which resolves with a bright, cheerful song-like melody in the horn. Duration is approximately 6 minutes.I had a great time arranging this piece, and I hope you will enjoy playing it. It presents some unique challenges and expressive opportunities, and it is a real crowd-pleaser.

Capriccio may be thought of whimsically, as a fantasy, while Ballata can be treated as a dance. Additionally these two ideas may constantly interact as each movement contains traces of the other. As this music is not programmatic in nature, no specific imagery must necessarily be sought after, but rather the material can be woven as the performers see fit within the tempo and dynamic guidelines. Sensitivity should be paid to the note-value relationships present within many tempo changes, as well as hemioli and other perceived metric shifts. Finally, performers are encouraged to explore the full range of textural colors present as this will accentuate the development of these ideas.
