Satie: Sarabande No.1  Arranged standard wind quintetThe Sarabandes are three dances for solo piano composed in 1887 by Erik Satie. Along with the famous Gymnopédies (1888) they are regarded as his first important works, and the ones upon which his reputation as a harmonic innovator and precursor of modern French music, beginning with Debussy, principally rests. The Sarabandes also played a key role in Satie's belated discovery by his country's musical establishment in the 1910s, setting the stage for his international notoriety.French composer and critic Alexis Roland-Manuel wrote in 1916 that the Sarabandes represented a milestone in the evolution of our music...pieces of an unprecedented harmonic technique, born of an entirely new aesthetic, which create a unique atmosphere, a sonorous magic of complete originality.The sarabande is a dance in triple meter that originated in the Spanish colonies of Central America in the mid-1500s. It had migrated to Europe by the 17th Century, where in France it became a popular slow court dance. Satie's modern reinterpretations consist of three dances with a total duration of roughly 15 minutes:Sarabande No. 1 - A-flat major (This one)Sarabande No. 2 - D-sharp minorSarabande No. 3 - B-flat minorThe melody is shared amongst the top 4 instruments, and the quintet do not play tutti all of the time. Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) This wind quintet version of Schubert's Erl-King is equally at home as a standard recital piece or used as a piece of ghostly music at Halloween. Erlkönig (The Erl-King) is a dramatic poem by the famous German writer and poet, Goethe, written in 1782. Although it has been set to music by many composers, the most well-known is the 1815 setting by Franz Schubert for voice and piano. The Erl-King is a challenging work for the singer because they must portray four distinct characters; narrator, father, son and the Erlkönig himself. Schubert's writing is different for each character in terms of pitch, harmony, rhythm, key (major and/or minor), and melodic shape. Singers usually alter the timbre of their voice to emphasise the different roles. In this arrangement for wind quintet, the arranger takes the timbre differences a step further by assigning the characters to different instruments in the quintet. The flute plays the role of narrator, the clarinet is the anxious son, the horn plays the reassuring ( but then worried) father, and the oboe plays the Erlkönig with his beautiful enticing melodies that try to lead the boy astray. The bassoon plays the rumbling and troubling bass line that helps set the mood.

Karl King's best-known composition is his Barnum and Bailey's Favorite. In that march, he is able to conjure up a magnificent scene of the old circus tents -- all the aromas, all the sounds, all the sights, and, of course, the circus band. King in 'A Night in June' he transports you to a simpler time. With images of sitting on the porch at evening listening to the crickets sipping on ice tea and just enjoying life. This arrangement is for Woodwind Quintet; where the French Horn has the melody for the majority of the time. Usually in woodwind quintet settings French Horn plays a support role with the Flute or oboe playing the melody. In this arrangement the horn gets to shine. This is a great teaching piece for an advancing Woodwind Quintet. It does have some tricky key signatures for all of the parts but would make a great supplement to a summer music camp or music program looking to challenge a young ensemble.

Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) This delightful vocal duet from the popular operetta, The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe), has been carefully arranged for wind quintet. The opening begins with a beautiful duet for oboe and bassoon, before the flute enters to play the main waltz theme. The clarinet also gets an opportunity to play the melody later, so there is something for everyone in this arrangement. Although presented here as a standalone instrumental version, it was originally created to accompany two soloists, singing the roles of Count Danilo and the widow Anna. It could still be used as an accompaniment because it remains in the original key. .
