In performance the combined score/part can be used - each wind quintet instrument plays as written, with the bassoon playing as if with a bass clef, the others as if with a treble clef. Eb and alto clef parts (based on the horn in F) are also available to enable inclusion, in a larger ensemble, of alto saxophone, tenor horn, viola. Programme Note I wanted to write a piece that took inspiration from one aspect of the political process. The starting point was a quote from William Burke (1729-97): All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter. [Speech on Conciliation with America, 1775] This quote did not in itself suggest to me all that was required, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'SpeakYour Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections. The music is presented as a combined score/part and I felt that in this context the idea of musicians playing within a single 'forum' would have an extra resonance. The music is presented on two sides of a single page, and I deliberately preceded the third section 'Trust' with the instruction 'turn over...'. In this way I hope to evoke the idea of 'turning over a new leaf'.

This composition is a fast and thriving bebop tune for woodwind quintet, which was already performed and recorded by one ot the best ensembles of it's kind, the Bläserquintett der Staatskapelle Berlin.It's a typical bebop tune, but due to fact, that classical musisians normally are not used to freely improvise on chords, it's written oot throughout. At a speed of 180 bpm more skilled players are required. The composer recommends to play it strict in time as indicated.This work suites well as a da capo piece for serious classical concert programs, as well as a relaxed excursion and sidestep from the always similar classical music practise. This beautiful hymn was first published by John Francis Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi (1751), with four Latin verses, and music set in the traditional square notation used for medieval liturgical music. Besides John Francis Wade, the tune has been attributed to several musicians, from John Reading and his son, to Handel, and even the German composer Gluck. The Portuguese composer Marcos Portugal or King John IV of Portugal have also been credited. Thomas Arne, whom Wade knew, is another possible composer. This arrangement features an easy-to-play version for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon). Key: G Major.

This arrangement adapted for woodwind quintet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. One of the most beautiful, fully romantic works for mixed chamber ensemble (oboe, horn and piano), Carl Reinecke’s Trio in A minor op. 188 is here arranged for woodwind quintet. The oboe and horn parts are the same as the original (with an attempt at unifying articulation and dynamics), while the rest of the quintet covers the piano part. This works surprisingly well, with the result sounding as if it had always been conceived for this combination (well… almost – the flute part gets a thorough workout in the low range which is not entirely characteristic). Featuring oboe and horn, but giving every instrument plenty to do and moments to shine, this is a fantastic addition to the romantic woodwind quintet repertoire – which, besides the usual suspects, is surprisingly scarce. The level of difficulty is just above advanced intermediate – the low flute part, some tricky rhythmic passages (especially for the clarinet) and overall ensemble considerations make this a challenge, but a very, very rewarding one, for an advanced quintet.

II. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Tchaikovsky The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a dance for a ballerina. Tchaikovsky introduced the celesta to Russian music lovers on 19 March 1892 when the Nutcracker Suite was performed for the Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg. It is heard in other parts of Act 2 of The Nutcracker besides the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one of the ballet's best known musical numbers. The complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America.
