Classical,Romantic Period. 25 pages. RayThompsonMusic #688217. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1083995). Schubert wrote three string trios, all of them in the key of B-flat major. From the first of these, D 111A, a trio Schubert wrote in 1814, only a few measures are extant. The string trio D 471 consists of a completed first movement and an incomplete second movement, composed in 1816. The last of these trios, D 581, was completed in four movements, exists in two versions and was composed in 1817. This is an arrangement for standard wind quintet of the 1st mvt of D471 The horn part is for NATURAL HORN in Bb basso (Alt Horn in F provided).

One of the most beautiful, fully romantic works for mixed chamber ensemble (oboe, horn and piano), Carl Reinecke’s Trio in A minor op. 188 is here arranged for woodwind quintet. The oboe and horn parts are the same as the original (with an attempt at unifying articulation and dynamics), while the rest of the quintet covers the piano part. This works surprisingly well, with the result sounding as if it had always been conceived for this combination (well… almost – the flute part gets a thorough workout in the low range which is not entirely characteristic). Featuring oboe and horn, but giving every instrument plenty to do and moments to shine, this is a fantastic addition to the romantic woodwind quintet repertoire – which, besides the usual suspects, is surprisingly scarce. The level of difficulty is just above advanced intermediate – the low flute part, some tricky rhythmic passages (especially for the clarinet) and overall ensemble considerations make this a challenge, but a very, very rewarding one, for an advanced quintet.

The five works are far superior to the usual music written to accompany meals and deserve a place in the concert repertoire. The original scoring for pairs of oboes, horns and bassoons with quite demanding parts for the oboes and bassoons and little interest for the horn players may also help to explain why these Divertimenti have been neglected. This arrangement shares out the musical interest more evenly and shows each instrument off to advantage. Players of intermediate ability or above will enjoy playing the four movements, Allegro molto, Andantino, Menuetto (Moderato) with Trio and Presto.

The piano quintet was composed in 1819, when he was 22 years old; it was not published, however, until 1829, a year after his death. Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, the Trout Quintet is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The composer Johann Hummel had rearranged his own Septet for the same instrumentation, and the Trout was actually written for a group of musicians coming together to play Hummel's work. This is mvt III, a lively presto. It suits the wind quintet.

This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo piece:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement is entirely in 4/4 using Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.
