Transcription for woodwind quintet of the work originally composed by Erik Satie in 1914 for solo piano. By this time in his career Satie was filling his scores with non-standard performance instructions, satiric barbs and modernist prose, scattered about on a carefully, expertly fashioned musical structure of experimental harmonies, strangely static rhythms, and radically miniaturized forms. In the case of Les Trois Valses Distinguées du Précieux Dégoûté, Maurice Ravel was undoubtedly the target of Satie’s satire. Ravel was the Précieux Dégoûté (a revolting or jaded dandy, a fop), and Satie’s Trois Valses subtly derided Ravel’s popular Valses nobles et sentimentales, composed four years earlier. (Another set, Avant-Dernièrniers Penseés, is also published by Creative Spirit in a transcription for woodwind quintet.)TOTAL DURATION: about 3–1/2 minutes.

Anton (AntonÃn, Antoine) Joseph Reicha (Rejcha) (26 February 1770 – 28 May 1836) was a Czech-born, Bavarian-educated, later naturalized French composer and music theorist. A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven, he is now best remembered for his substantial early contributions to the wind quintet literature and his role as teacher of pupils including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz and César Franck.Reicha's 25 wind quintets, composed in Paris between 1811 and 1820, were mostly premiered from 1817 in the foyer of the Théâtre Favart by some of the world's fifinest wind soloists. They were well received and were played al over Europe shortly afterward.Reicha claimed in his memoirs that his wind quintets filed a void:At that time, there was a dearth not only of good classic[al] music, but of any good music at al for wind instruments, simply because the composers knew little of their technique.[Wikipedia]Notes concerning this editionIn preparing this edition various manuscripts were consulted including the facimilies held by the IMSLP and Clarinet Institute. C Jam Blues is a jazz standard composed in 1942 by Duke Ellington and performed by countless other musicians, such as Dave Grusin, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, and Charles Mingus, arranged here for Recorder Quintet.As the title suggests, the piece follows a twelve-bar blues form in the key of C major. The tune is well known for being extremely easy to play, with the entire melody featuring only two notes: G and C.A performance typically features several improvised solos. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.It was also known as Duke's Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts.Ellington's black and white film was produced in 1942. The video depicts a jam session where Ellington begins playing with a double bass before gradually being joined by other members of his band, among them drummer Sonny Greer and trumpeter Rex Stewart. The film title is Jam Session. Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between 1945 and 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions. Bill Doggett recorded a version on his 1958 tribute album Salute to Duke Ellington (King). C Jam Blues was used by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band as the basis of their song The Intro and the Outro. Mulgrew Miller and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen included the song in their 1999 album The Duets.
