Make sure the melody is always prominent whichever instrument takes it. 'The Salley Gardens' is of Irish origin with words by W.B. Yeats. I have tried to create a rather dream-like atmosphere; the quaver passages should flow smoothly with the phrasing well observed. 'The Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies' should rollick along with good contrast between the slurred and staccato notes. 'The Water Is Wide', although of Scottish origin, was included in Cecil Sharpe's 'Folk Songs from Somerset'. It's in a contemplative style; again, make sure the melody line is never over-powered by the other instruments. 'Drunken Sailor' should be played with great humour, preferably after a few tots of rum!

Fifteen Arrangements of Traditional Tunes from Cornwall arranged for Lever harps tuned in Eb, Bb or F, or any pedal harp.  Guitar chords included, with duo parts for Flute or Violin.These tunes have been placed in progressive key order to create a satisfying “Cornish suite†that facilitates lever and pedal changes. All tunes were typeset to fix exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece.Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minor adjustments. Only one song in this collection, #6, has any lever or pedal changes (B-flat and B-natural). Otherwise, there are only lever or pedal presets in preparation for the next song. Dynamic markings, fingerings, metronome markings, breath marks, and lever/pedal changes are provided throughout. However, the musicians should use whichever expressive markings and lever/pedal adjustments suit them, no matter what this book indicates! Due to space constraints, first and second endings were only indicated above the flute/violin part in the full score and dynamics only within the harp part; but these markings apply to both instruments. (However, all markings are indicated on the separate instrumental leaflet.) This entire book of arrangements can be played on a harp of only 26 strings (3.5 octaves), from low C to high G. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.
