Over the years, I have had occasion to create arrangements of various hymns and spirituals for my own use as well as for other performers. My intent has always been to take a fresh look at familiar material, to make something both challenging and rewarding for the performers involved and still retain the audience connection found in doing the Old Songs. Shall We Gather is an adaptation of the old hymn Shall We Gather at the River by Robert Lowry (1826 – 1899). The calm flowing power of the river runs through this arrangement. As the river flows and changes, so does its reflection in the music of strength and the enduring capacity of faith. This arrangement is substantive and expressive for both the vocalist and the pianist. Suitable for recital or worship. It is expressive and passionate, requiring an established singer. The accompaniment is at times straight forward and at others requiring a confident hand in the more ornate and robust passages.

The familiar melody is now restructured into the gently asymmetrical 3+2+2 rhythm of a 7/8 meter. The music flows out, with that slight asymmetry giving an attractive lilt to the well-known tune. As with the rhythmic structure, the harmony is also reconsidered. Sonorities from related tonalities appear, providing new colors to enhance the well-known theme. The choral parts are attractive and singable, with a little alto divisi and each part having a turn at the melody. Suitable for an intermediate to intermediate/advanced choir. Since this is a digital realization, a Youtube link is provided to allow for view of the lyric along with music playback.

After performing the work several times, I thought the piece would provide an interesting and meaningful arrangement for solo violin and string orchestra. It is a beautiful and expressive work for all members of the ensemble providing interesting music for all players. It is a rewarding work for both the developing and advanced player. Happy memories can often be tinged with a little sadness in the knowing that those moments are gone. Perhaps in this moment, one can be thought of as wistfallen.

The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction leads to the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (Vocal Solo, SSA, SAB, SATB) as well as separate versions featuring the addition of Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. Difficulty is moderate for the singers, violin and organ. Suitable for a sacred setting or the concert hall. Duration approximately 4 minutes. Score and part included.
