This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

This is still a work in progress, the middle section is going to be difficult, if not impossible on guitar. Some may see this as more of an homage to Chopin rather than a historically accurate version. That being said, both this arrangement and the original are incredible pieces of music, and it may be my favorite piece of all time, and I think jaws would drop if the average person hears a guitarist effortlessly playing Chopin as if it was meant for guitar. 1. Arranged for guitar. 2. Guitar Tablature added. 3. Key changed 4. Notes removed and and inverted chords changed to be idiomatic for guitar.5. Slurs added. 6. Chord nomenclature added. 7. Piano pedal and phrase markings are a bit unnecessary for a guitarist so they are not included. Slurs and ties are more important for a guitarist, so I don't want a ton of swoops symbols obscuring slurs and ties. As with the other Chopin arrangement I made, I want super romantic music while making sure it isn't super difficult to play. If I wanted a super hard version, I would just find the public domain version and read treble and bass clef in a difficult key for free. There could also be a lot more mantaining of historical accuracy if this was arranged for a 7 or 8 string guitar. Having a low E and Eb would really changed the trajectory of the arrangement. Sure a guitar can play an Eb chord, but it always sounds too high pitched, when really the original has a low powerful bass note as the music inflects a different key. So that's why I took some liberty with the bass notes for guitar. It's incredibly grimy sounding even though A minor isn't typically seen as a dark and low key.Tips:1. A Bb chord in the key of a minor is an example of a Neopolitan chord, named after a city in Italy. This is one main essence of Chopin, and constantly using them allows him to really toy around with the key and suspense. To Do:1. Measure 10 is glitched out. Sorry. It is correct in a way but it is strangely spaced. It is a challenge because at times it looks like measures have the incorrect amount of beats, but I think Chopin's freedom of rhythm is the reason why, and bizarre triplets and quintuplets are being forced into the measure. 2. Combination version without tab?3. The full piece?4. Add rhythm to tab?

Program note: First of all, a huge embrace for Max Hobart who has been so very supportive by promoting and premiering new works for the orchestra. Since 1991, I have written three works for Max and the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston. Symphony No. 4 ... War and Peace is my fourth contribution and this work is dedicated to Max. A year ago, John Finney and the University Chorale of Boston College premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000. It was a millennial commission by the Jesuit Institution for the community of Boston College. For that occasion I had originally planned to write a Mass whose texts would include both the Latin from the Ordinary of the Mass - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Agnus Dei - and poems concerning the atrocities and senseless killing in warfare during the last century.However, as it turned out, the poems I chose ended up reflecting the Latin text, which is all about faith and redemption. But I still wanted to write an anti-war symphony. When I approached Max with this idea, he was very excited. Initially he was a little concerned that I might want to use the Tolstoy novel as my inspiration. I assured him that it would not be a four-hour symphony. In order to convey a political message through a symphonic work, texts set as songs are the most direct way. For this symphony, I have narrowed my focus to poems written by veterans of the First World War - some euphemistically call it the Great War. The first poem by Rupert Brooke, The Soldier, has an uneasy, patriotic cheerfulness to its message. The second poem by Wilfred Owen, Dulce et decorum est, is a more realistic view of warfare. Dying for one's own country is not so cool when the dead and the dying are staring at your face!!! The third and last poem by Ivor Gurney, To his love, reflects on the aftermath of war: peace, but at what cost!!! Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915) died on a naval expedition near the Greek island of Gallipoli. He died of blood poisoning. Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918) was wounded three times in France in the spring of 1917 and was sent back to England to recuperate. He returned to the Front, and was killed on November 4, 1918, just a few days before the Armistice was signed. Ivor Gurney (1890 - 1937), a composer as well, was acutely sensitive to the horrors of the war and, after being wounded and gassed in 1917, he was sent back home to a mental hospital. Also, I imagined certain harmonies, completed in imagination when playing the Suite for years. - With many arrangements by guitarists, who didn't play the Suite on cello, I can hear, they are not going the right way! - Bach himself arranged cello Suite No 5 for lute - as lute Suite No 3 - giving us an example of how he himself went about when adding accompaniment notes - and he certainly did!Good examples are Gavotte 2 and the Gigue from Cello Suite No 5 - or lute Suite No 3. Bach also arranged the violin Partita No 3 in E major for lute - as lute Suite No 4, another example of how he himself went about. - In the arrangement here, I tried also to transfer the slurs on the cello sometimes to the guitar - e.g. in the Gigue - when I found it brings better the intended articulation better out.I hope you thoroughly enjoy the arrangement!Â

While the lyrics make no mention of a holiday, it is popularly regarded as a Christmas song owing to its winter theme. During the 1940s, whenever Hollywood celebrities with vocal talents attended parties, they were expected to perform songs. In 1944, Loesser wrote Baby, It's Cold Outside to sing with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave. Garland has written that after the first performance, We became instant parlor room stars. Published by David Fraser (A0.1384069). The inspiration for Hommages III. Sonata No. 1 â??Gothicâ??, Movement 2 comes from the German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. The music begins with Hansel and Gretel walking into the witchâ??s house made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. The children have a sense of unease and fright once they enter the house, which is demonstrated in the music by the eeriness and darkness of the harmonies. The term oscuro is found at the beginning of the music â?? this is the Italian word for dark. The repeat, which begins at measure 25, is marked sempre sotto voce which translates to always under the voice, meaning always in a hushed tonal quality and dynamic volume. This section represents the children trying to tip-toe out of the house without the witch taking notice. The repeat is almost identical to the beginning section, with the exception of measures 39 and 40 which have ties in the right hand; the similar measures 15 and 16 in the first section do not have these ties. The right-hand trills in measures 53 through 55 symbolize the children attempting to quietly turn a key to unlock the door, which would lead them to freedom.This is the second movement only of the Sonata which is the third piece from 'Hommages: Suite pour le Piano'. 5 pages. It is a love song about a modern woman whom the singer has fallen totally in love with to the extent of falling for her endearing quirks as well as her flaws. The single peaked at No. 17 in the U.S. in 1977, and at No. 53 in the UK in 1986, Joel stated in an interview that he was attempting to replicate the fingerpicking common in folk guitar music. He accomplishes this by playing arpeggiated triads in the right hand. He also notes that the production was purposely minimal to capture the purity of the tune as a folk song.

Originally written for a Delian suite for various composers remembering Schoenberg back in 2006, I have now revised it and provided separate parts. The piece is atonal and satirically based on Twinkle twinkle little star by way of a supposed reaction from Pluto after it was relegated from planet to dwarf planet by astronomers here on earth. I wrote the following introduction for the Delian suite version: 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' (Jane Taylor's poem used for the tune to the French song Ah, vous dirai-je maman) is given an atonal treatment, for string quartet, in memory of the 'lost' planet of Pluto. Of course Pluto is still there, merely changed in the human taxonomy, which deems it to be no longer a planet. Similarly Twinkle, Twinkle is no longer a nursery rhyme but a strange atonal piece with memories of its past self moving towards an unknown space. It will be curious to know at which age a child recognises the twinkle-twinkle motif in this new, totally untraditional version. However, atonal though it is, it still appears to have some kind of 'home.' 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman, ce qui cause mon tourment,' ce n'est plus la petite chanson d'enfants, elle s'en va vers les étoiles dans un astronef de quatuor à cordes atonal. Son tourment?: Sa lamentation ne vise que la taxonomie humaine des planètes-Pluton, tu n'est plus planète? Maman! où se trouve la réalité, où se trouve notre domicile? Nous avons tous nos taxonomies, mais la réalité est en dehors... Le sens de tonalité est en dehors... Mais malgré tout, on reconnaît la mélodie... N'est-ce pas?.
