In Preludio e Fuga, this return to history refers to the scordatura of the so-called 'Viennese temperament': It can be found in the most important repertoire pieces of the double-bass (such as in Mozart's Concert Aria KV 612) as third interval between the first to the third string and thinner strings which respond better. But to Holliger, virtuosity has never been an end in itself: More and more motivic particles emerge from the sweeping 'Prélude non mesuré' with almost unreally flickering sounds due to numerous harmonics and gradually fit together to form the elements of a four-part fugue. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with Russian musical folklore and poetry has never been severed. Clytus Gottwald has taken up the cause of transcribing two of the songs by this composer, who died in the First World War, for nine-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBBB) with solo bass in his honour. In spite of the Latin title, Memento vivere is a German-language secular song based on a text by Friedrich Hebbel which is permeated by harmonies sharpened with dissonances. The music of Kythere to words by Gerda von Robertus is characterized by the excessive use of harmonic shifts in the style of Debussy.

Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna’s most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna’s skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of them I. Groundbreaking The first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen’s Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen’s was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues-from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire-before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord. II. Steffl Steffl, the nickname for Stephansdom’s soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom’s north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna’s skyline. III. 1945 As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom’s roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom’s great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945. IV. Anton Pilgrim Anton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen’s organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese’s love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna’s most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Three Hopper Paintings was written in the early 1990s. The three movements are connected by a ten-note theme. Much of the music, both melodic and harmonic, is derived from this. In my early twenties at the time, and having recently spent some months in Vienna studying the atonal and twelve-tone works of Arnold Schoenberg, I was greatly influenced by the music and compositional techniques of the Second Viennese School. The first movement, Nighthawks, is brooding and mysterious attempting to capture those qualities depicted in the painting. The music takes its cue from the early atonal piano works of Schoenberg. Rooms by the Sea has an impressionistic quality. With some exceptions, the music is predominantly in the sound world of Debussy. Some artistic license is taken with the last two chords to portray a sudden sea breeze closing the door shut. House by the Railroad is musically the most literal representation of the three paintings. The sustain pedal is left down for almost the entire movement to simulate the rumbling of an oncoming train. Allegedly, the house in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was inspired by it. Ironically, I lived in a small carriage house a few hundred feet from an active railroad when I composed the work.

Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, K. 491, was composed in 1975 for Dillon Ford's personal use as soloist in performances at Florida International University. Since no Mozart cadenza survives for this, perhaps the most romantic of all the Mozart concertos, he consciously set out to create his own cadenza in a kind of hybrid style that is as much redolent of the Viennese Ländler as it is of the Brahms waltzes. Nor did he hesitate to introduce such stylistically advanced features as the concluding double trills, which are virtually unknown in Mozart's keyboard compositions. He believes the result is a concise but effective classico-romantic cadenza in quasi-improvisatory style well suited to its original purpose. He offers it to the pianist who is seeking musically engaging material that has as yet been little heard during public performances of what is perhaps Mozart's greatest contribution to the piano concerto genre.
