Composed in just three weeks in 1899, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is a string sextet in one movement by Arnold Schoenberg. Whilst known better for tone rows, his dodecaphonic music and the Second Viennese School, Schoenberg was a master of harmony (writing a number of books on the subject) and, in his early life, was inspired by the music of Brahms and Wagner. This is his best-known tonal work. Its description as a tone poem is not surprising given it takes its inspiration from Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name, as well as Schoenberg’s strong feelings towards his future wife, Mathilde Zemlinsky, sister of his teacher, Alexander von Zemlinsky.The work is said to have five sections, one for each of the stanzas in the poem. The poem, from 1896, describes a man and woman walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night. The woman shares a secret with him, that she is pregnant but not with his child. The man reflects upon this before warmly accepting (and forgiving) the news.The work premiered on 18 March 1902 in the Vienna Musikverein by the Rosé Quartet. As was normal at the time, Schoenberg produced a string orchestra version that was premiered on 29 November 1916 in Prague, conducted by Zemlinsky, which was later revised in 1943 to better support the soloists, also adding more articulation/accents and tempo markings.Whilst the piece was controversial at the time, both musically and due to the poem’s “inappropriate” subject matter, Richard Dehmel himself was impressed, writing “I had intended to follow the motives of my text in your composition, but soon forgot to do so, I was so enthralled by the music.”This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q771471). My 3rd String Quartet is in six contrasted movements. Certain musical figures recur across the work, but there are few themes as such. The main emphasis is on contrast of mood, texture, harmony, pacing and timing. Unlike many of my works this quartet had no extra-musical inspiration, and in principle should have no subtitle. Certain features already present in my music became more prominent in this new work: modes (limited collections of pitches) have always helped me to focus musical character, but here a sense of key note for each mode became much more pronounced, as did the difference between modes for each section of the work. A sort of hybrid key-system emerged (even with equivalents of major and minor) which is not normal tonality, nor does it aim to imitate it. Unlike tonality this key-system includes noises, extended performance techniques and intervals outside Western tuning as available resources. What I hope it does is to focus the listening experience onto different musical areas, to encourage a sense of both modulation from one area to another and to give the music a sense of goal. No conscious knowledge of this is needed when listening: the music should communicate directly on its own.Here, then, is this collection of six musical colours, related and unrelated, different yet belonging together, variable yet in a set order. Hence the subtitle, chosen both for both its sound and its sense: ‘hana no hanataba’ meaning, in Japanese, ‘bouquet of flowers’.A brief description:1)Moderately fast. Short droplets of sounds gather increasing momentum. 2)Very fast. Canons and bells at different speeds.3)Very slow – fast – very slow – very fast – very slow. The main slow movement and its main scherzo. An emphasis on non-tempered tunings and on inhaling and exhaling waves of sound. The slow sections feature florid melodic writing. In the exuberant scherzo competing duos and trios create imaginary folk music.4)Extremely fast/extremely slow. Open strings and harmonics fuse into a single string instrument – like a sort of large resonating Medieval tromba marina.5)Very fast. A variation on movement 2). Variation, Schoenberg told Cage, is just a sort of repetition ‘with some things changed and others not.’6)Slow - Very Fast - Fast – Slow. The opening calm harmonies and florid melodies evoke movement 3) in different music. The fast part features one overt theme: a fanfare-like call to attention which is subject to extensive development. There is much use of non-Western tuning. At its climax the music freezes into a frieze – a wall of sound standing in front of the audience with increasing obstinacy and certainty as the work grinds towards its cadence.

The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. No fixed tonal centre2. Each movement inherits material from its predecessor3. The work is modular. This means that the 1st, 4th and 7th movements can be presented together as the symphony proper if full staging is not possible. The movements that double as concertos can be presented separately in their own right, hence their individual opus numbers.1. The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

English • German • French.The oratorio 'A Child of Our Time' was Tippett’s artistic and emotional response to the events that led to the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom of November 1938. For his oratorio Tippett used as his formal and historical models the Bach Passions and Handel’s Messiah which share with this contemporary morality the subject of the death of an individual set against the universal background of human suffering. Tippett’s use of the spiritual as a contemporary equivalent for the Lutheran chorale of the Bach settings draws his audience more closely into the drama through the spirituals’ ‘unique verbal and musical metaphor’. By 1941, when Tippett had completed the composition of his oratorio, the practicalities of staging a performance during wartime were difficult to say the least. It was, however, through the direct agency of his lifelong friends and professional colleagues, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, that the work was first performed in London on 19 March 1944 under the direction of the former Schoenberg pupil Walter Goehr, and with Pears himself as the tenor soloist.

It explores various facets of the instrument (as in the more complex nature of Pierrot's Commedia Dell'Arte character). The piece features a serial 'note-row' procedure but in a relaxed manner, more akin to Berg than either Schoenberg or Webern. The second piece, Folk Lament, alludes to a folk idiom by using modality (characterised by the flattened seventh degree of the scale) within a sonata form structure. The two main themes give a broad feel of being improvised and, particularly in the case of the second subject, includes composed-out forms of folk-like ornamentation. The final piece, The Clown, employs bluesy inflections, an irregular time signature (5/4) and a clear rondo structure. Varied repetitions of the main, jaunty theme, alternate with contrasting episodes in related keys, one of which is even a derivation of the 12-bar Blues. The set is highly accessible and suitable for more advanced bassoonists including students and professionals. Aimed at the advancing high school or college trumpet player, the six movements can be played in their entirety or in subsets. At 8:30 in length, it would be perfect for a recital!The musical material for much of the piece is based on pieces I wrote for my undergraduate composition courses at Western Michigan University, but reworked and expanded. The fifth and sixth movements are entirely brand new music I composed to round out the suite. Underpinning all movements is a dark and sad feeling, but with rhythmic energy.Movement I, titled Moondrunk, is a reference to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. It’s an absurd, dissonant, and drunk-feeling dance. Movement II, A Stroll in the Moonlight, shows off the lyrical, expressive, and reflective nature of the trumpet with cup mute. The title is a reference to Hogwarts teacher Professor Lupin, who, within the Harry Potter universe, is a werewolf. The music does not reflect this. In Movement III, Death Dances in the Dark, I experimented with using a highly-chromatic melody which is incorrectly harmonized by D minor chords. The piano and trumpet combine at shocking points in octaves and rhythmic unison to create an unsettling effect. Movement IV, titled Melancholy Memories, is based on a movement of a song cycle I wrote in college. It is at points lovely and unsettling, with a sense of nostalgia.Movement V, titled Dimensions (Pablo’s Dream), is a tribute to my love of the paintings of Pablo Picasso. His cubist works attempted to show multiple perspectives of objects simultaneously. The whole movement is a large palindrome, with smaller palindromes placed in it. To accomplish this musically, I used a twelve-tone row, parallelism in the piano part, and various palindromes in the form. The row is intervallically the same forward and backward. I composed the rhythmic material in the first section stream-of-conscious style, and filled in the pitches. The piano accompaniment is in parallel major chords on each note of the row. The melody at letter H uses the row transposed up a tritone, and parallel minor chords in the accompaniment.The final movement, Chase, shows off the virtuosity of the trumpeter. A common theme of dreams is the chase. These are often quite terrifying, at least in my experience. The back-and-forth nature of chases is explored rhythmically in the opening bars. Phrases of different length and dissonant harmonies are unsettling. A bold cry of terror is heard throughout the movement, harmonized by a chord with a perfect fifth and an augmented fifth. Descending and ascending scales wake up the terrified dreamer, and the music never fully resolves.
